SUMNER HIGH
BOYS BASKETBALL
Head Coach- Jarrett Mentink, Assistants- Keith Ross, Chad Marquez
Jarrett was named SPSL Coach of the Year
The boys finished 4th in the SPSL tournament, losing a close game to Bellarmine in the 3rd/4th place game. They qualified for the West Central District Tournament and beat Battle Ground and Emerald Ridge to advance to the State Tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Head Coach- Katie Grad-Hyppa, Assistant Coach- Julie Williams
Katie was named SPSL Coach of the Year
The girls won the SPSL tournament, defeating Emerald Ridge 50-48 in the championship game. Junior Lainee Houillon had 24 points in the win. The team qualified for the West Central District tournament and beat Decatur punching their ticket to state. Lainee Houillion was recognized by the Tacoma News Tribune in the paper’s All Area Team. She was also selected by the Tacoma Athletic Commission as the Athlete of the Year for Girls Basketball among all Pierce County High Schools.
WIAA Scholastic Cup: Outstanding Team Award- Team GPA- 3.62
Varsity Team Members- Olivia (Liv) Collins, Adrianna Copeland, Mattie Gillaspy, Lily Goold, Parker Gould, Kylie Griffin, Lainee Houillon, Madison (Maddie) Hughes, Kessa Nohr, Adrianna Perez, Daveya Sohappy, Leeschelle (LeeLee) Sohappy.
DANCE/DRILL
Head Coach: Jenny Ford
The Sumner High School dance team qualified its lyrical routine for the state WIAA Dance/Drill Competition on March 24 in Yakima. The routine was choreographed by Head Coach Jenny Ford & SHS Senior Abby S. This is the first year that the dance team has qualified for state in over five years, and has been a season-long goal for the dancers!

GYMNASTICS
Head Coach- Kathryn Shimer Elliott, Assistant Coach- Mia Scardina. Kathryn was named SPSL Coach of the Year and Mia was named Gymnastic Coach’s Association Assistant Coach of the Year.
SPSL 4A League Champions finishing with an undefeated record! Madisen Sorensen is the League Champion in Vault and Floor and finished 2nd in the All Around. Other top 3 finishers- Ava Alastra 2nd (Vault AND Floor), Madisen Sorensen 2nd (Bars), Ava Davidson 3rd (Beam AND Floor),
Ava Alastra was named Tacoma Athletic Commission Athlete of the Year for Gymnastics among all Pierce County High Schools. Madisen was also nominated and she was also recognized for her state championship in the Floor competition

BOYS SWIM/DIVE

The 200 Medley relay with Walsh Crowley, Tanner Wilson, Logan Hunsicker, and Philip Kim placed 4th at the West Central District meet and advanced to the State meet.

Tanner advanced to the State Championship meet to defend his undefeated season. He finished 2nd in the 100 fly and 6th in the 100 breast at State! Tanner was also recognized by the Tacoma Athletic Commission as a nominee in the Athlete of the Year competition.

WRESTLING

Matt was named SPSL Coach of the Year and Washington Wrestling Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year.

Boys
The boys were co-champs during the regular season and then won the SPSL tournament. Sumner had 3 individual champs (Elias McDonald, Cody Miller, Drake Thompson) and five 2nd place finishers. Twelve wrestlers qualified for the Regional tournament. Cody Miller was recognized by the Tacoma Athletic Commission as the Athlete of the Year for wrestling. Elias was also recognized by the T.A.C. as a state champion from Pierce County.
The team took 3rd place at the 4A state tournament. This is the best finish ever by a Sumner Wrestling Team!
Two State Champions- Elias Mcdonald (120) and Cody Miller (145). Drake Thompson (152)- 2nd place, Matt King (182)- 3rd place, Hank Herrick (152)- 5th place, Burak Bowers (285) and Jeremiah Schliesman (126)- 6th place. Other state participants were- Dylan Coffey (138), Sean Ponce (285)

The girls team had two wrestlers qualify for Regionals...Chole Herrick and Trinity Day. Chloe advanced to state (115).

WIAA Scholastic Cup: Boys Varsity: Distinguished Team Award- Team GPA- 3.176
Girls Basketball
Head Coaches- Kim Peters/Patrick Ferguson , Assistant Coach- Kelley Washington
Finished 2nd in the Pierce County League (PCL) with a 10-2 league record. Won their first West Central District game vs. Auburn Mountainview punching their ticket to state! Beat Peninsula at Districts and Kennewick at State.
Junior Jazmyn Shipp was named Co-MVP for the Pierce County League and reached the 1,000 point mark for her career.
WIAA Scholastic Cup: Girls Varsity: Outstanding Team Award- 3.649 Team GPA
Varsity team members are- Olivia Amer, Lanie Ashby, Ava Bailey, Evin Elias, Kaylie Hellner, Raylie Karsten, Sophia Mackay, Emma Moore, Kylie Noland, Ava Rice, Jazmyn Shipp.
DANCE/DRILL
Advisor- Lisa O’Brien
District Champions for Kick and Military. They placed 2nd in their Pom routine.
On March 24th they will compete at the State meet in Yakima, where they will perform all 3 routines.
GYMNASTICS
Head Coach- Jennifer Skidmore , Assistant Coach- Patricia Littlefield
The team took first at the Sub-district meet on February 11th and did well at the District meet on February 16th. The following gymnasts qualified for State- Haley Ceccoli, Paige Littlefield, Alana Retchless, Maya Skidmore.

West Central District qualifiers included: 200 Medley Relay team (Sawyer Welringer, Jeremiah Mam, Andrew Perdue, Duncan Roush), Lincoln Timmerman- (200 Freestyle), Duncan Roush- (50 and 100 Freestyle), Andrew Perdue- (100 Butterfly),Lincoln Timmerman- (500 Freestyle), 200 Freestyle Relay team (Andrew Perdue, Holden Brummett, Camden Nachtsheim, Lincoln Timmerman), Sawyer Welfinger (100 backstroke) 6th place, Jeremiah Mam (100 breaststroke), 400 Freestyle Relay team (Duncan Roush, Andrew Perdue, Lincoln Timmerman, Sawyer Welfringer).
