District to take additional time to review, study and evaluate Sumner High School modernization project

The Sumner High School expansion and modernization project remains a prominent topic at School Board meetings as the Board of Directors takes a measured approach, arising from current state and local circumstances, to carefully consider potential options for the project’s direction that will meet the school’s current needs while responsibly planning for the future.

At the Dec. 12 board meeting, the School Board directed the District Administration to form a Task Force to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review, study and evaluation of the Sumner High School expansion and modernization project in light of current state and local circumstances, including scope, design, cost and timeline.

To facilitate and complete the project review, the School Board authorized the District Administration to hire necessary consultants to facilitate the Task Force’s review and evaluation. The review process is anticipated to take about six months and will include selecting a construction management firm, appointing Task Force members, conducting Task Force meetings, and holding public forums, and will culminate with a recommendation from the Task Force to the District Administration for School Board consideration.

The District will soon communicate the opportunities for the public to learn more about, and engage in, this critical review of the Sumner High School expansion and modernization project. The District and School Board very much welcome and value input from the community District-wide.

Background:

  • 10/10/18: Due to current state and local circumstances, including a construction environment with high demand and costs coupled with a complex project, there was only one bid which was well beyond the construction budget for the Sumner High School expansion and modernization project and was rejected upon motion of the School Board.
  • 10/17/18: The School Board accordingly authorized the District Administration and project design team to develop a revised design plan to meet educational and safety needs.
  • 11/19/18: At a Study Session, the District architects presented for School Board consideration a revised design plan for the Sumner High School expansion and modernization project that took into account current state and local circumstances, which included substantial changes from the original design plan.  The District Administration also recommended consideration by the School Board of alternative options for further review, study, and evaluation in light of those circumstances.
