The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District Comprehensive School Counseling Program promotes and enhances student learning by assuring that all students achieve academic success and develop life skills. Comprehensive School Counseling Program Components
Direct Services to Students:

Instruction: School counselors provide classroom lessons in a systematic way to all students through large and small group activities. Topics may include bullying, harassment and intimidation, career exposure and social-emotional skills including skills for learning, problem solving and conflict management.

Appraisal and Advisement: School counselors help students understand their abilities and values including establishing personal goals for educational development and future career planning.

Counseling: School counselors provide professional assistance and support to a student or group of students during times of transition, heightened stress or other situations impeding student success.
Indirect Services to Students: School counselors provide referrals to appropriate experts needed to support students beyond the training and/or responsibility of the school counselor's role. These may include, but not limited to community agencies to support academic, career and social emotional needs. School counselors collaborate with staff and parents and consult with appropriate district and community resources to support student success.
Program Support: School counselors manage and assess their building comprehensive school counseling program to ensure evidence-based practices that impact student learning.
School counselors will:
- Design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs and the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) National Model
- Ensure that students will receive guidance curriculum in the areas of academic, career, and social/emotional development. Provide intervention services for students experiencing academic and social barriers to learning. Provide support to students and families to ensure success in student attendance, behavior, and graduation, and prevention of drug use and violence.
- Ensure that students have access to a safe school climate necessary for academic and social/emotional growth.
