Get Involved: Extracurriculars and Athletics
Coaches play an important role in the life of a student athlete. A coach can influence the development of sport-specific skills as well as the development of the athlete as a person and their approach to other aspects of their life. The satisfaction can outweigh the challenges.

An effective coach possesses a number of skills. Of these skills, knowledge of the sport and how to pass that knowledge onto the participants they are coaching are key. Key coaching skills include:
- Organizing
- Observing
- Analyzing
- Adapting
- Communicating
- Improving performance.
As a volunteer coach, you have the opportunity to:
- Be a good role model for students
- Help students develop a love of the sport
- Help students develop self-confidence, consistency, camaraderie and sportsmanship
- Help students understand why things are being done, or learn to ask for suggestions when not sure and to admit and apologise when they make a mistake
