Coaches play an important role in the life of a student athlete. A coach can influence the development of sport-specific skills as well as the development of the athlete as a person and their approach to other aspects of their life. The satisfaction can outweigh the challenges.

To volunteer, visit our  How to Apply to Volunteer page to get started.

An effective coach possesses a number of skills. Of these skills, knowledge of the sport and how to pass that knowledge onto the participants they are coaching are key. Key coaching skills include:

  • Organizing
  • Observing
  • Analyzing
  • Adapting
  • Communicating
  • Improving performance.

As a volunteer coach, you have the opportunity to:

  • Be a good role model for students
  • Help students develop a love of the sport
  • Help students develop self-confidence, consistency, camaraderie and sportsmanship
  • Help students understand why things are being done, or learn to ask for suggestions when not sure and to admit and apologise when they make a mistake
