  District calendar coming to your mailbox

  Check your mailbox soon for the 2021-22 school year calendar, which includes:

  

   

  School supplies

  Elementary
  In order to provide some relief from back-to-school shopping, most elementary schools* are asking families to contribute a $20 donation per child to cover the cost of school supplies. Families may pay online or at their child’s school.

  
  *Liberty Ridge Elementary: School supplies for students attending Liberty Ridge have already been purchased by both the school and Open Life Church. Students will receive their supplies on the first day of school, but should plan to bring their own backpack.
  
  Middle school
  Lakeridge
  Mountain View
  Sumner

  High school
  Please bring a small binder, paper, and a pen/pencil the first day of school. Specific school supply lists will be given out for each class by teachers during the first days of school. 10th – 12th graders should plan on bringing their Chromebooks.

   

  School schedules

  First day schedules

  Grades 1-12

  There will be special school start times for students in grades 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 on the first day of school, Sept. 7.

  • Grades 7, 8, 10, 11, 12: School start time will be 12:25 p.m. School lunch will not be served. Bus transportation will be five hours later than the regular weekday bus schedule.*

  • Grades 1-6 and 9: Follow the regular Tuesday school day schedule. Breakfast and lunch will be served to students in these grades. Buses will operate on the regular weekday bus schedule.

  *For example, if your regular morning bus pickup time is 7:10 a.m., your bus will pick you up at 12:10 p.m.

  Kindergarten
  The first day of kindergarten is Sept. 10. All schools operate on the regular school day schedule, which varies by school.

  • Early Start Elementary Schools: 8:25 a.m.-3:10 p.m.

  Crestwood, Daffodil Valley, Liberty Ridge, Maple Lawn, Victor Falls

  • Late Start Elementary Schools: 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m.

  Bonney Lake, Donald Eismann, Emerald Hills, Tehaleh Heights

  • Sumner Early Learning Center: 8:35 a.m.-3:20 p.m.

  Regular bell schedules

  Bell schedules vary by school. Elementary schools will continue to be defined by “early start” and “late start.” Here’s the 2021-22 bell schedule for each school.

  Late-start Mondays

  Our weekly late-start day is on Mondays for the 2021-22 school year. Referred to as “Late Start Monday,” these are days when students will catch the bus and begin school about 90 minutes later than other days. This late start schedule one day a week allows teachers to participate in professional learning groups to collaboratively plan, learn and share instructional practices, which increases school performance and student achievement.

  Driver shortage means a likely disruption to bus transportation

  Due to a severe bus driver shortage, it’s highly likely that some bus routes will be affected to some degree on a daily basis. Any given route on any given day could experience a different bus number, earlier or later pick-up/drop-off times, and unfortunately the potential of no bus transportation at all.

  Please note these important items that could affect your child:

  • Different buses: It’s possible your child will ride two different buses — one bus in the morning and a different one in the afternoon. This means a different bus number and a different bus driver.
     

  • Bus times: Pick-up and drop-off times could vary and may not always align exactly with school start and dismissal times. Because of the need to double-up on bus runs, your child could be picked up earlier or later than when school begins. Another possibility is that your child might need to wait (supervised) at school for a bus to pick them up. As soon as we know if your child’s route is affected, we will send a robocall to families with as much advance notice we can give.
     

  • No transportation: As a last resort, when no bus drivers are available, it’s possible we may not be able to provide bus transportation for some routes on any given day. We encourage families to have a back-up plan with an alternative way to get your child to school. This a very unfortunate reality that will likely affect routes on a daily basis. If your child is unable to make it to school, it will be an excused absence. We will notify affected families as soon as we possibly can. We will continue to provide transportation for special education students who have special transportation in their IEP.

  This bus driver shortage also affects:

  • Waivers: While a condition of waivers is that District transportation is not provided, we have made exceptions in the past if a bus is not full. This year, however, our buses will be full and we are unable to accommodate students on waivers. Families will need to provide their own transportation to and from school.

  • Bus passes: We are unable to allow students to ride a different bus when wanting to, for example, go home with a friend or be dropped off at a grandparent's house.

  Beginning Sept. 1, families may use our bus stop lookup tool to view their child’s route for the 2021-22 school year. Until then, our Transportation Department staff is working diligently to finalize the routes amid this servere bus driver shortage.

   

  School meals

  School meals will continue to be provided to all students at no cost throughout the 2021-22 school year. We still strongly encourage eligible families to complete the Free & Reduced-Price Meals application as they may also qualify to have fees waived or reduced for ASB cards, sports participation and other extracurricular activities. Learn more.

  COVID-19 prevention measures at school

  The District will continue to follow requirements and guidance provided by the governor and state and local health authorities. Below are a few highlights. View the complete K-12 COVID-19 Requirements for the 2021-22 School Year.

  • Masks: Students, staff and visitors must wear masks indoors, except when eating and drinking. This applies regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. Masks are not required when outdoors regardless of vaccination status.

  • Attestations: Quarterly health attestations and daily temperature checks are no longer required. Families should continue to keep their child home if they are sick, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or have tested positive for COVID-19.

  • Physical distancing: In classrooms, students will maintain 3 feet of distance between each other to the degree possible. In common areas outside of the classroom, we will maximize opportunities to increase physical space and maximize distance between students to the degree possible.

  Directory information withholding

  Parents and guardians may choose whether their child’s name, photos and other directory information is used in district and school publications (print and electronic), social media, websites, videos or by the news media.

  If you would like to opt your child out, complete the Directory Information Withholding Form and return it to your child’s school. Please think carefully before restricting this information as your child’s name and photo cannot be included in yearbooks or be part of classroom, team or club photos.

  If you complete the Directory Information Withholding Form, your child’s directory information will also not be disclosed to outside organizations, the military, institutions of higher education or used in any communication that could reach the public or media. Learn more about keeping directory information private.

   

  Some immunizations required for students

  A COVID-19 vaccine is not required for students to attend school at this time, however, there are some required vaccines for school attendance. The state Department of Health requires students to show proof of required vaccines. View a list of free immunization opportunities for children. Learn more.

  Medication at school

  If your child has a health condition that requires treatment or medication at school, written permission from the parent/guardian and healthcare provider must be provided before medications can be administered at school. Renewal of written permission must be completed at the beginning of each school year and whenever the health care provider adjusts a medication. Learn more.

• State continues to prioritize in-person learning with updated requirements

  We look forward to welcoming students back in the fall for full-time in-person learning five days a week. Today, Gov. Inslee continued to prioritize in-person learning by announcing that all students, staff and visitors (vaccinated and unvaccinated) in Washington state K-12 schools are legally required to wear face masks indoors due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. 

  Please note, this masking decision is not a choice being left to local school boards; it’s a state mandate. Gov. Inslee said that he will continue to re-evaluate this mask requirement in the coming weeks and months. 

  In order to accommodate all students who choose full-time in-person learning, physical distancing requirements in schools will remain at three feet in classrooms to the degree possible and reasonable.

  For more information, please see the state’s updated K-12 COVID-19 Requirements for Summer 2021 and the 2021-2022 School Year. Here is a partial summary of changes to the requirements as of July 28, 2020:  

  • All staff and students must continue to wear face coverings/masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status
  • Physical distancing requirements have been updated to support provision of full-time in-person instruction
  • Information on how schools should “layer” mitigation strategies for the best outcome is provided
  • Quarantine protocols have been updated to reduce student exclusions from instruction
  • Vaccinations are not a current requirement for school district staff and students

  Free school supplies at curbside pickup events

  Do you know a student in need of free school supplies? The District’s annual Back-To-School Resource Fair is happening this year with curbside grab-and-go events.

Here are important items to note regarding schedules for next school year as well as a look ahead at key dates for both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years.

  First day of school

  Bell schedule

  Bell schedules vary by school. Elementary schools will continue to be defined by “early start” and “late start.” Here’s the 2021-22 bell schedule for each school.

  Late-start Mondays

  This will have weekly late-start day on Mondays for the 2021-22 school year. Referred to as “Late Start Monday,” these are days when students will catch the bus and begin school about 90 minutes later than other days. This late start schedule one day a week allows teachers to participate in professional learning groups to collaboratively plan, learn and share instructional practices, which increases school performance and student achievement.

  School supplies

  In order to provide some relief from back-to-school shopping, most elementary schools* are asking families to contribute a $20 donation per child to cover the cost of school supplies. Families will be able to pay in August through Family Access or at their child’s school when elementary offices reopen on Aug. 24.

  *Liberty Ridge Elementary: School supplies for students attending Liberty Ridge have already been purchased by both the school and Open Life Church. Students will receive their supplies on the first day of school, but should plan to bring their own backpack.

  BLHS FCCLA students compete at national level

  Congratulations are in order for Panthers from Bonney Lake High School who participated in, and took home awards from the National FCCLA Leadership Conference and Competition!

  Two of the STAR event competition projects earned the top two spots in the nation!
   

  • First place: Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation by Hailey Littlefield and Grace Pearson for their pizza restaurant design project.

  • Second place: Chapter Service Project Portfolio by Lily Hoopes and Samra Young for their work with the Bonney Lake Food Bank during COVID-19.

  In addition, all BLHS projects received a GOLD ranking this year. The other projects that placed were:

  • Repurpose and Redesign by Paige Littlefield where she repurposed materials to make a memorabilia chest.

  • Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation project by Claire Fruehauf and Shelby Sjoblom for their Italian restaurant design project.

  • Entrepreneurship project by Dylan Lanz and Gigi Osborn for their children's gym business plan.

  We also had two students who dedicated many hours to evaluating competition projects. Thank you to Lauren Lewis and Callia Cartwright.

  We are so proud of these students for their hard work and making our community shine at the national level!

  School board awards construction contracts for SHS and MMS expansions

  At the July 14 meeting, the school board awarded construction contracts for Sumner High School and Mountain View Middle School. Bids came in under the estimated budget for both projects, which have made substantial behind-the-scenes planning, design and permitting progress over the past year. Here’s more detail about the final two projects funded by the 2016 capital construction bond: 

  • SHS Expansion Phase 1: Take a peek inside this first phase of the project, which includes a new security vestibule, commons, cafeteria, library, student store, science labs, classrooms and more. This Phase 1 project deliberately incorporates a forward-thinking design to allow for the future Replacement Phase 2, which will be included in the District’s next bond proposal.

    • Construction contractor: Cornerstone General Contractors (total contract amount: $37,812,475)

    • Anticipated completion: Late 2022 

  • MMS Expansion: Highlights of the expansion include six new classrooms, redesigned classrooms, expanded commons area, security vestibule, remodeled office area, new flooring and updated exterior. ICYMI: The school’s track & field upgrade project was completed in November 2020. Watch the video celebrating the completion.

    • Construction contractor: Kassel & Associates, Inc (total contract amount: $6,999,000)

    • Anticipated completion for expansion: Early 2022

  New administrators join SBLSD in the areas of equity and HR

  We are excited to welcome two new directors to our Central Office: Sophia Agtarap and Adrienne Chacon!

  Sophia Agtarap, Director of Equity and Language Services

  Self-described as an equity and inclusion champion, Sophia joins our District in a newly-created position that will lead the development and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

  Her previous employment has taken her from Hawaii to Seattle and currently Nashville as the Director of Communications for the Divinity School at Vanderbilt University. She’ll be moving back to Washington to start her new position on Aug. 2.

  Once a high school English teacher, Sophia went on to hold positions as an English language and citizenship instructor, administrative counselor, program coordinator, and equity, diversity and inclusion consultant, as well as communication-related roles focused on marketing, outreach and online engagement.

  Sophia earned a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s in teaching in English and ESL, and a master’s of communication in digital media from the University of Washington. She is also earning her doctorate in education in diversity and inclusion from the University of Illinois.

  In her free time, Sophia, along with her spouse and two children, enjoy the water -- in the pool, at the beach and kayaking. They also enjoy science and discovery through trips to the science center and tinkering with gadgets at home.

  Adrienne Chacon, Human Resources Director

  With already a few weeks under her belt, Adrienne started her new position on July 1. This newly-created second HR Director position works alongside current HR Director Diana Thomas to support District staff.

  No stranger to education, Adrienne’s nearly 30 years of leadership experience comes from public schools in Federal Way and Northshore. She held positions of a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and most recently as principal at Thomas Jefferson High School. She was also instrumental in the creation and execution of several initiatives, including In Service of Equitable Education Opportunities for All, High Expectations with High Support, Building a Schoolwide Culturally-Responsive Environment, and Districtwide Systems Alignment.

  Adrienne earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, K-8, PE from Northwest University and a master’s in educational leadership and principal certificate from City University.

  In her spare time, this married mother of two teenage girls enjoys reading, music, dance, drawing/painting and traveling. Adrienne is also quite the cyclist as she has twice biked to Lake Chelan, once over Snoqualmie Pass and once over Mt. Baker.

Select your learning model for 2021-22 school year; deadline May 19

SBLSD Families, 

We’re excited for the 2021-22 school year, which includes options for both full-time in-person learning and full-time distance learning. In order to finalize plans, we need all families to please select their child’s learning model, which will remain in effect through Jan. 28, 2022. 

Please read this entire message for details about the learning model options and instructions for how to make your selection in Skyward Family Access. The deadline to make your selection is May 19.

Items to note: 

• Students in all grade levels in both learning models will attend school 5 days per week
• Schools will return to normal hours
• Weekly late starts on Mondays will remain for all students
• Transportation will return to normal operations
• All students will have access to free breakfast and lunch
• If a learning model is NOT selected by May 19, the student will automatically be enrolled for in-person learning

Full-Time In-Person Learning

Students will attend school 5 days a week. The District adheres to all state-mandated requirements to maintain safe and healthy learning environments. Based on current guidance and discussions at the state level, at this time, we anticipate the following health and safety precautions will continue for the 2021-22 school year:

• 3 feet of physical distancing in the classroom 
• students and staff wearing masks 
• frequent hand washing/sanitizing 

Full-Time Distance Learning

Our current plan includes two distinct fully remote options -- one for K-5 students and another for 6-12 students. Both distance learning programs will be more robust than this school year, and must follow specific attendance and student engagement rules set forth by the state.   

Kindergarten: 5th Grade Full-Time Distance Learning Option*

• Students will receive live instruction, through Zoom, from a SBLSD teacher five days a week
• Instruction of core classes will be consistent with offerings at the elementary schools 
• Students will attend class with students from other SBLSD elementary schools
• Students should be available to live Zoom during regular school hours, exact schedule to be determined
• Instructional materials will be provided

* If there are not enough elementary students at a grade level requesting distance learning, we will reassess and consider offering instruction at that grade level through a 3rd-party provider. 

6th - 12th Grade:  Full-Time Distance Learning Option*

• Remote learning will be offered through Edmentum, a 3rd party provider, and students will be supported by a certificated teacher from Edmentum, not a SBLSD teacher 
• Edmentum courses offer recorded video instruction and independent learning (there will be no live Zoom instruction with the exception of teacher support and office hours)
• Students are expected to log in 5 days a week, and they can access online courses any time of day
• Students are expected to dedicate 30 hours per week to online coursework
• Courses offered through Edmentum are limited. Some in-person district courses may not be available in the distance learning model.
• A variety of courses are available to meet all state and district graduation requirements 
• Students enroll in two courses at a time that need to be completed in 6 weeks

* If enough middle students request distance learning, we will reassess and consider offering a Distance Learning Academy taught by SBLSD teachers. 

High School Running Start Students

• Running start students must meet with their high school counselor to plan course sequences and complete an EVF form.
• Running Start students planning to attend ALL courses at the college should choose the Full-Time Running Start option.
• Running Start students who plan to take at least one course through their high school should choose the learning model that reflects how that course will be taken.

Example: If the student plans to take math at their high school in person, they should choose the In-Person Learning. If they intend to take that math class in a distance format, they should choose Distance Learning.

We are excited to announce that plans are underway to welcome ALL students back to full-time in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year. We will share additional information with you in the coming weeks. Here are a few highlights:

We will continue to respond to changing guidelines and provide updated information as needed. That said, our intention at this time is to provide full-time in-person instruction for every Sumner-Bonney Lake student. 

Registration is open for next year
Registration for the 2021-22 school year is open. If you know of someone who hasn’t yet registered their child for school next year, now is the time. The process is fast and easy using our online registration portal.

• Using 3 feet as our metric for physical distancing, all families who prefer full-time in-person instruction will have that option.
• Details about distance learning options for next year will be available shortly.
• Students will be required to wear face coverings. 
• The USDA announced that free breakfast and lunch will continue to be provided for all students through the 2021-22 school year.
