    Dear Viking Families,

We are so happy to have the opportunity to serve our wonderful Viking students and families. Please read to find out what is happening at our amazing school.

The Sun May Come Out Tomorrow

In preparation for the hopeful change in the weather, we are asking families to review the school dress expectations. Also, to prevent any sunburns, please apply sunscreen to your children in the mornings before coming to school. Please talk with your child and assist them with dressing for school while meeting these rules outlined in our Student and Family Guide on page 17.  Copies are also available in the office.

Students must remove all headwear while in the building.
Clothing must cover stomachs, backs, shoulder and chests.
Shorts, skirts and dresses must be no shorter than 3" above the top of the knee caps.
Footwear must be worn at all times and appropriate for activity.  For safety reasons, strapless shoes and high heels are discouraged.
Sunglasses are not allowed to be worn in the building.
    Fun In the Sun Today

Mrs. Salsbury's Kindergarten class enjoyed planting some annuals in the front of the school this afternoon in the sun!  Mrs. Ottele's fifth grade also enjoyed lunch outside today!

    Staying Focused on Strong Attendance

Thank you for helping your child finish strong by doing what is needed to be at school, on-time every day.  Feel free to consult this resource for more information and be sure to plan your future family vacations during school breaks.

    Dear Viking Families,

I am happy to report that Bonney Lake Elementary is a recipient of the 2016 Washington Achievement Award.  Our school is being honored for High Progress.

This is an extraordinary accomplishment and is a direct reflection of the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and the support and guidance of our parents.

The Washington Achievement Awards are sponsored by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. They celebrate Washington’s top-performing schools and recognize achievement in many categories. This highly-selective award is based on our school’s performance on the Washington State Achievement Index.

I hope you will visit the OSPI Washington Achievement awards site to learn more about the awards and the criteria for selection.

The selection process for the Washington Achievement Award is very rigorous, and all of us take great pride in this accomplishment.

As we celebrate this recognition we will continue to focus our efforts on student achievement as we seek excellence everyday and Bonney Lake Elementary.

Thank you for helping the Vikings SAIL!

How Are We Doing? Deadline is today - Friday, April 28th.

Your feedback is critical in helping our district continually improve. Please take this short, multiple-choice survey to share your perspective on the educational effectiveness of your child’s school.

Your survey responses, along with other research and analysis, play an important part in the development of each school’s annual improvement plan, which includes goals that are specific, data-driven and measurable.

If you have more than one child in the district, you may complete a survey for each school your children attends. Hard copies of the survey, also available in Spanish, are available at your school.

    Dear Viking Families,

Great things are happening and we continue to work hard here at Bonney Lake Elementary. Here are a few things to be aware of:

Clocks Move Ahead on Saturday Night!
Don't forget to change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time on Saturday night. Spring forward and move ahead one hour!

    Say Cheese - Date Change!
Class and group picture day has changed.  We will have pictures taken on March 16th (next Thursday), instead of March 14th. Please be sure to change the date on your calendars at home.

Pennies for Patients - What an Amazing Start!
From March 6th through the March 17th students will have the opportunity to collect change to raise money for the fight against cancer.  Collection containers went home earlier this week. Today we cashed in this week's coin collections for a total of $977.29 which is amazing! Our initial school goal was to raise $1000.00, but we will surpass this for sure! Keep up the hard work Vikings! We have encouraged students to remember that every penny is important.

Dream Big, Set Goals, and Take Action!
During the month of March students are learning more about being committed to a goal, having persistence, and practicing problem solving.  Be sure to talk with your child on how they can apply this learning at home.  You may consider watching this brief video at home with them.  It might be a great opening to a conversation about persistence.  Link

    Dear Viking Families!

It was a short week with the three snow days off.  The district provided the following information regarding how the school calendar has been affected:

“To date, students have lost 3 days of instruction due to weather-related school closures.  The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up.  April 3 and May 26 are now regular school days for all students in grades K-12.  In addition, the last day of school is now Monday, June 26.  In the event of additional weather-related school closures, the last day of school will be affected.”

If you would like to change how you receive notifications from the district office in regard to school closures or changes, the following webpage talks about updating notification preferences in Family Access:  https://www.sumnersd.org/Page/3772

Last Week For Viking Spirit Gear Orders
Be sure to visit www.SpiritGearDirect.com or pick-up an order form in the office.  Spirit wear will be on sale until February 16th.  There are some great new styles available, so be sure to check it out.

Second and Third Grade Concert Rescheduled
The 2nd and 3rd grade concert has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the Performing Arts Center next to Sumner High School.

Also, the Kindergarten and First Grade Concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the PAC as well. Please calendar these changes.

Beautiful Valentine Card Entries Coming In!
This is the last weekend to make a creative Valentine Card to decorate the front office and be part of our contest!  We will be selecting winning cards from each grade level, along with other categories, such as the cards with the "best message", the "funniest cards", etc.  As students complete their cards, they can be turned into the office (for hanging). Students can turn in their Valentine cards up until Monday, February 13th. The cards must have the student's name, teacher's name and the grade on the back and the winners will be announced on Valentine's Day and will receive prizes!

    Testing Next Week
February 13th - 16th our Vikings will be completing their mid-year assessments.  Please be sure that your child gets plenty of rest, has a nutritious breakfast, and is on-time to school.  Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that all students are ready to show their academic growth and success.

    Dear Viking Families,

February is here!  We are thrilled to start another month with our fantastic students, families, and staff. Be sure to read all about what is happening here at Bonney Lake Elementary and mark your calendars for upcoming events!

Be sure to visit http://www.SpiritGearDirect.com or pick-up an order form in the office.  Spirit wear will be on sale until February 16th.  There are some great new styles available, so be sure to check it out.

Kindergarten Registration - Early Registration is Suggested
Please visit https://www.sumnersd.org/Page/62 for information and to download a registration brochure and packet for the 2017-2018 school year. All completed packets should be turned in to the office.

    Kindness Matters!
February is here! We are talking with students about being kind and showing appreciation for others through encouragement and compassion.  Watch this short video to hear what kindness means through the eyes of a child. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7YW9cMQrw0

Have You Entered the Contest Yet?
As part of our celebration around being kind to others, Bonney Lake Elementary will be having a Valentine Card contest.  We are looking for students to create their own special card to be displayed in the front office.  Students have until Friday, February 10th to turn in their card.

There will be winners from every grade, so we hope that every student participates!  The winners will receive certificates and a prize on Valentine’s Day.

Mid-Year Testing is Coming Up in February - Please Mark Your Calendars
February 13th - 16th our Vikings will be completing their mid-year assessments.  Please be sure that your child gets plenty of rest, has a nutritious breakfast, and is on-time to school.  Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that all students are ready to show their academic growth and success.
