Sumner, WA 98390Alumni Scholarship Fund
The Sumner High School Alumni Association has a new partnership with the Sumner-Bonney Lake Education Foundation. The Association has a small board of members active in the organization, and is challenged to raise sufficient money to maintain the $3,000 in student scholarships we award annually. The Alumni Association met with the Foundation to learn how our combined efforts would benefit students, today and tomorrow. We voted unanimously to invest our scholarships savings account with the Foundation providing fiscal management, and matching funds for students through Dollars for Scholars increasing the value of Alumni scholarships. As part of the partnership, we are committed to creating an endowed scholarship fund with a goal of $60,000.The Alumni Association has set a goal of raising $60,000 to create an endowed scholarship fund. With the Alumni’s initial funds and the donations to the Annual Fund campaign, we have raised nearly 75% of the $60,000 goal. On our behalf, the Foundation solicits donations through the Annual Fund Campaign for our Alumni scholarships from current members of the Association, prior scholarship recipients, and individual high school alumni classes celebrating milestone years. The money raised in this campaign goes into the endowment account and interest will be used to fund scholarships into the future.
The Sumner High School Alumni Association annually awards:
- Centennial Scholarship ($1000)
- Joe Hanni Memorial Scholarship ($1000)
- Don Opseth Memorial Scholarship ($1000)
Through the partnership, the Alumni Association will continue to award scholarships to graduates of Sumner High School. We will continue to define the criteria for selection, to interview scholarship candidates and to make the final decision on awarding scholarships. The Foundation will work with the students and the college or university to transfer the funds awarded. Together with the national organization Scholarship America, Sumner High School Alumni scholarships may be matched at some universities.
