Student Teachers/Interns

  • Welcome to the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District! We are so excited to have you in our community.

Student teachers and interns are important to us, and universities are encouraged to request placements for practicum and field experiences to help prepare the next generation of Sumner-Bonney Lake School District teachers.

    Our Cooperating Teachers

The responsibility of the cooperating teacher is to provide a meaningful experience that enhances the student’s career development. Our selection criteria includes teachers with at least three years of teaching experience, are in good standing in the district, and exhibit the skills necessary to work collaboratively with future teachers to insure their success. Details of our districts expectations of our cooperating teachers can be found in our Student Teacher & Intern Handbook.

    Student Teachers/Interns & Practicum Candidates

Student Teacher/Practicum/Intern placements are a result of formal agreements between Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and cooperating universities. Before a student teacher/intern may be placed in one of the District's schools, a formal agreement with the university must be on file in Human Resources.

If you are a university and would like to request a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or confirm that your university has an active MOU, please send an email to studentteachers@sumnersd.org. The process to finalize the MOU can take up to six weeks and does not include the time it takes to facilitate the placement. Please plan accordingly for placing students in a timely manner. The District reserves the right to decline a partnership with any Institution.

    Request Placement Here

Placement requests should be initiated by university placement coordinators. We ask that coordinators complete a survey for each candidate for which they are seeking placement.  Ultimately, it is the district placement coordinator, with permission of the building administrator, who decides which student teachers and interns will be placed in the school building.

The deadline for receiving placement requests are as follows:

    • Fall (start dates in August - December) - June 1
    • Winter (start dates in January - March) - November 1
    • Spring - (start dates in April - June) - Feb 1

After the university has confirmed placement and notified the student, we ask the student to complete the following:

    • Complete an application through the District’s online application site. Students will establish a profile and apply to a student teacher position.
    • Call the Human Resource Department to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting.
    • Complete Safe Schools Training.  The online training program will be forwarded to the student via email to be completed prior to final approval for their assignment.
    • With final approval, the student will return to  Human Resources to sign a disclosure form and receive an ID badge prior to arriving on campus the first day.

    Short Term Observation Candidates

Short Term Observations can be requested directly from the Human Resource Department by emailing studentteachers@sumnersd.org. Short Term Observation Candidates will be asked to complete a Volunteer Application, also located in the District’s online application system. Once an observation candidate completes the volunteer application and is cleared through a Washington State background check, the candidate may schedule the observation directly with the cooperating teacher.
