    Panthers & Panther Parents,

We had another fantastic homecoming week!  Tons of fun, spirit, competition, an excellent assembly, game and dance!

Junior and Sophomore parents.... The PSAT is being offered on Saturday, October 13 here at BLHS.  The PSAT helps to measure readiness for college, access scholarships, and practice for the SAT.  On average, taking the PSAT helps students to increase their SAT performance by about 100 points. The PSAT is also the qualifying test to identify National Merit Scholars and award merit scholarships.  To register, please contact the bookkeeper and purchase the test ($20).  Spots are limited, so please do not delay.

Construction on our new Performing Arts Center is cruising right along!  Progress is being made every day and excitement is growing.  Right now the building is Panther Teal, but it will not stay that way!  It is a vapor barrier.  The outside will match the rest of the campus when it is finished.  Please visit the district construction web page for updates. https://www.sumnersd.org/construction

    Panthers & Panther Parents,

Thank you to all of you who attended our Open House this week!  It was such a great opportunity to meet you, share what we do, and connect as partners in your student's education!   Your kids are learning and teachers are already putting marks in their gradebooks.  This is a great time to get connected to Parent Access and start to monitor your student's performance.  It is easy to step back a bit and assume high school students are on top of things because they are so adult like many ways and are wanting that independence.  However, they still need you to keep involved.  If they are performing, then it is fun to watch.  If not, your monitoring will help prevent them from digging a hole and struggling to get out of it.

I have attached this year's first edition of "High School Years" for you to read.  It is full of useful information to help you and your students successfully navigate high school.  It is worth reading! Here is the September edition

Thank you for supporting our new cell phone policy (absolutely NO cell phones in class).  It is making a significant difference in students' ability to concentrate and engage in their teacher's instruction and their work.

Below is important dates that are coming up.

    Upcoming:

    10/1 - 10/5  Homecoming week!

10/6     Homecoming Dance 8:00-11:00.  Students will be given a wrist band upon entering the dance.  If they dance inappropriately, it will be cut off as a warning.  If they dance inappropriately again, their dance is over.  These students will have to meet with the principal with their parents and explain the situation prior to attending another BLHS dance.

    10/9     Senior Parent Night 6:00pm

    11/6     Fall Parent Conferences  2:30pm - 7:00pm

Posted by Cris Turner on 9/4/2018

    Panthers & Panther Families -

Good evening!   A few quick details about school starting tomorrow - starting time tomorrow, chromebook details, and our new cell phone policy.

    Starting time tomorrow:

All freshmen arrive at the normal time(7:25 start) - we have an entire morning of freshman orientation activities planned.  Sophomores, juniors, and seniors all arrive at noon - class starts at 12:30.  Lunch is obviously offered for freshmen - but is not available for upperclassmen.

All students will go to their Homeroom at 12:30 - where they will be provided their most recent and updated class schedule.  There have been a few scheduled changes in the last couple weeks due to making sure students are placed in the correct Math and English courses based off their SBA Math & ELA test scores.

    Chromebook details:

Freshmen and new students will be issued their chromebook on Thursday.  On Friday, we will start the process of checking student chromebooks - ensuring that all students have one and that they are functioning properly.  Students need to bring their chromebook, charger, and case to be inspected.  Broken chromebooks will be repaired with the cost of the repair going to the student.   Students who have lost their chromebook will be charged the replacement value.

After their chromebook is checked, students then have 24 hours to purchase their chromebook assurance through our bookkeeper.  Chromebooks are about a $400 value, so the assurance is a very good deal!  Assurance cost $20 ($10 reduced lunch price, $5 free lunch price).

    Cellphone policy:

I sent this information out earlier in our back to school letter, but thought it important to send again.

This year there has been a change to our cell phone policy.  Last year the entire staff noticed how cell phones were getting in the way of instruction as well as student's ability to engage in lessons.  The research on cell phones and learning supports what teachers were seeing last year.  It is our mission, our purpose to ensure every student learns, that every student gains the skills to be successful, and every student - 100% - graduates.  This brings about our new school wide cell phone policy change.

Our Policy.....  Cell phones are NOT allowed to be out - in any way - during class time.  They should be turned off and out of sight.  If they are seen or heard - Teachers will have the student put their phone in a brown bag, will staple it shut, and put it on their desk.  At the end of the period the student may take it out and use it during passing.  If the student leaves class and is using his/her cell phone in the hall during class time - their phone will be confiscated, placed in the main office, and they may pick it up at the end of the day.  Phones can not be out during class time.

Earphones are also NOT to be used during class time.  Earphones have been found to be equally disruptive and get in the way of student learning.

Parents that need to get a hold of their students for emergency situations - please call the main office (253) 891-5700.  We will be able to help you out.

I am super excited about tomorrow!   It is going to be a great day - a great year!!!
