Principal's Message

  • Family Update May 1

Posted by Sarah Gillispie on 5/1/2020

    Panthers & Panther Families,

Good afternoon and happy Friday!  I hope you are all finding ways to maintain and even strengthen your relationships with your friends and families.

We are getting into the groove with distance learning.  I appreciate the grace you have given staff as we are learning.  Teachers are working hard to engage students, providing two flexible lessons a week.  Students are expected to be engaging in lessons and responding to teachers.

I want to acknowledge that some families have unique circumstances that can make distance learning extremely difficult.  We understand this and will be as flexible as possible.  If things are confusing, overwhelming, or there are specific barriers you need teachers to be aware of, I highly encourage you to reach out to them.  The learning that is happening right now is extremely important and the content is essential for success.  We want to help out in any way we can!

Due to continued social distancing orders from the governor, the district has made the unfortunate decision that will not be able to hold Prom and that we need to move forward with making contingency plans for a hybrid graduation.  I am deeply saddened by this, as I know our seniors are, and will do everything I can to make graduation, as well as other end of the year senior events, extremely special.  I will be sending out information early next week to all seniors and their parents / guardians outlining a plan for these events.

Here are a few important announcements:

    • Parents of seniors - have your student check email for information about end of year celebrations.  We need their input.

    • We are celebrating ALL of our Senior Panther’s future plans: college, workforce, military… etc.  Signing / Future Day 2020!  Seniors need to fill out this form to participate and upload your favorite photo.   Singing / Future Day

    • Class of 2021 -  The BLHS counseling team is going to be holding weekly "Coffee with Counselors" meetings on Wednesdays from 11:00 - 12:00.  On May 6th, we will be discussing and answering questions regarding College Planning during the COVID-19 pandemic.  If you would like to attend, email me and I will send you a zoom link the day before.

    • Free & Reduced Lunch applications are being accepted.  Many families are in a financially different place than they were a month or two ago.  Please take this opportunity to complete the F/R application if you qualify. It can help with the cost of summer school as well as fines and fees.  Here is the link to the district page:  https://www.sumnersd.org/Page/3337

    • Spring Sports athletic fees that were paid by CC - the refunds should show up within a few days.  Refunds for fees paid by check or cash will be processed next week.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    Panther Parents,

I sincerely hope all of you and your families are staying healthy and safe.  I also hope you are enjoying the extended time with your kids.  All three of mine are home (20, 18, & 17) and while I am loving the time with them - I would also love some time away from them!

I know you and your students are being inundated with emails and are probably on information overload.  It is very difficult to keep track of everything as our world evolves with COVID-19.  Thank you for your grace, patience, and support as we have moved to distance learning.  Teachers are working extremely hard to provide the best education we can.  They are starting to settle into virtual leaning - so things should become much more consistent than they have been.  We truly miss our students and will continue to work to find ways to connect with them.

Learning continues.  We want to make sure every student connects with each of their teachers every week in some manner.  If your student is engaging with the online instruction, this will happen easily.  Two of the absolute best ways you can support your student is to 1) create a daily schedule with clearly identified school work time - at least 2 hours and enforce it, and 2) ask them about their assignments and look at their work.  Please do not assume it is getting done.   If you have questions, do not hesitate to email teachers, counselors, or administration.

This remainder of this email is full of information for you.  I will try to be as succinct as possible.

    • Some great news!  BLHS has been named one of the Nations' Best High Schools for the 5th year in a row!
    • I have attached the newest issue of High School Years  for you.  It really has some very useful information as to how to survive distance learning
    • FYI for parents of AP students.  The AP testing windows are:  May 11-15 and May 18-22
    • BLHS Yearbooks are currently on sale through 4/30/2020. You may purchase online at: https://payments.sumnersd.org/
    • We will be coming out with information about how students can retrieve personal stuff from lockers, how to return textbooks, and end of the year operations as soon as we can.  I know students are asking...
    • FYI for parents of Seniors: Ms. Moody sent out an email & a remind 101 for Seniors to fill out a Google Form for Signing Day - SIGNING DAY 2020 FORM  - The deadline to turn in their picture is April 30, 2020

    Panthers & Panther Parents,

Good afternoon.  I hope you are all safe and healthy!

We have officially completed THREE weeks of extended / virtual learning.  I want to extend sincere gratitude for the support and grace you have given us as we transitioned.  Thank you!  I wish I could say we are done transitioning, but unfortunately, I cannot.  The state of education, due to COVID-19, is still shifting across the state as things progress.  I will continue to try and keep you updated - along with the information sent to by the district.

As you may have heard - we are shifting from "Extended / Optional" learning to "Distance / Required" Learning.  Over the last three weeks’ teachers have provided students with work to reinforce or deepen concepts that have already been learned.  There was no "new learning".  While we would love for every assignment to be completed for the learning - these assignments were not required at all.  Students could improve their grade from doing the work, but if they did not, there is no impact on their grade.  Teachers just submitted 3rd quarter grades.  The grades your students had when school closed will be the grade they have now - unless it went up.

After Spring break we will be shifting to "Distance / Required" learning.  This is new learning.  Students are expected to engage in their classes, communicate with their teachers, and complete every assignment.  The district will send out specific information about this and you can also go to this SBLSD website.  We will definitely need your help in this.  Here are a few things that will help you with this.

    • We are creating a one-page document that puts all teacher electronic classroom information & websites in one place for your students to find.  Called (Classroom / Websites Links)
    • All teachers will be sending out only two lessons a week.  Each lesson should take less than an hour to do. The lessons are built around the most important concepts - the priority standards - of the course.
    • Lessons for periods 1,2, & 3 will be sent on Mondays & Thursdays.  Lessons for periods 4, 5 & 6 will be sent on Tuesdays and Fridays.  So students will not receive more than 3 lessons any particular day and zero lessons on Wednesday.
    • Every teacher will have at least 4 hours a week of posted "office time" where they will be available in real time to assist you or your student.  Teacher office hours will be communicated to your students and also listed in the Classroom / Website Links document.
    • Most teachers are using Google Classroom - Here is some info for you Parent Guide to Google Classroom
    • Many teachers will be using Zoom to interact with students.  Here are some Zoom Norms for Students  you should probably know to help them.  Every student's Chromebook is capable of Zoom.  When your students sign into a Zoom conference, they need to use their full name - not nickname or initials - so teachers know who they are.
    • If your student's Chromebook is broken - call the district Tech Hotline (253.891.6111) or email  tech_hotline@sumnersd.org   Tech is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays 8am-4pm.

Parents of seniors - Here is the most up-to-date information we have.   Class of 2020  Hold in there!  Information about picking up your student's graduation regalia will be coming out in the next two weeks.  We are working it out with Jostens.

Please have a fantastic Spring Break!!

    Panthers & Panther Parents,

    Good afternoon,

As a parent, I am inundated with emails, social media posts, phone calls, etc... with various information regarding all the changes surrounding the coronavirus.  There is a lot of information out there.  I apologize for adding one more, but as we enter our second week of the Coronavirus school closure, I want to try to keep you up on the happenings at BLHS regarding your scholar(s) education.

    Quick Info:

    • Some parents have received reminders about Student Led Conferences (SLCs) that were to take place tomorrow.  I apologize for not remembering to stop those!  There are no SLCs tomorrow.

    • There are a bunch of questions about senior activities and graduation.  I will be sending out information to all seniors tomorrow regarding this with as much detail as I can.

    Teacher Communication Schedule:

Yesterday, the district sent out a communication stating that teachers will email students every Monday with activities for an entire week.  That is not quite true for BLHS.  We felt it would be extremely overwhelming for scholars to hear from six teachers with a list the week's assignments all on one day.  We created a staggered schedule, based upon department, that has your students hearing from each teacher twice a week.  This should help reduce students being bombarded with email on Monday as well as allow teachers and students to work in smaller chunks, making things more digestible and easier to organize.  Here is the schedule.

    Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
Math English Science Social Studies CTE
Social Studies PE/Health World Lang Math English
    Science Arts CTE Arts PE/Health
    World Lang

Culture / Community Building Google Classroom:

As a building we are working hard to find unique and fun ways to keep students connected to school.  While we may not be able to walk the halls for the next 5 weeks, we can still have a thriving & supportive school culture.  A school culture that supports each other, full of kindness, and connects us in new ways.

We created a BLHS Panther Student Life Google Classroom to engage our students and productively create community from home.  This is a non-academic - no schoolwork - Google Classroom and we are inviting ALL BLHS students to join.  If you have your student open the BLHS Panther Student Life Google Classroom, they can add you as a parent/guardian so you can receive updates on the content being posted there!  Please encourage your student to join if they have not already!

    • BLHS Panther Student Life Google Classroom Code: l5xklqf

    • Make sure to use lower case "L" instead of uppercase "i"

    Parent Student Academic Support:

    • Schedule 2 - 3 hours a day for your student to work on school.  The more consistent your student is with following this - the easier it will be.

    • Ask you student to go through their schedule with you and share the communications from each teacher.  Follow-up with the teacher if their info is not clear.

    • Refer to my email on March 13th if you are in need of any resources.  I listed out a long list for you to reference.  You may also reach out to your student's counselor or any administrator at any time.

    • Give your student things to do during the day - they need to stay busy.  Challenge them to find a way to help someone else, better the community, or create something new -- all while properly observing social distancing.  Have them connect it to our POWER Values - take picture/video and send it to me.  I would love to post things on social media as to how Panthers continue to learn and enhance our community!

I want to sincerely thank you, from all the staff at BLHS, for your support, flexibility, and grace as we work through this together.  If you have not already done so, please make sure to take advantage of all the different ways to stay informed about BLHS listed below.

    Panther Parents -

I just sent this email to your students. Keeping you in the loop!

    Panthers,

Please take a moment of time to read this message and to watch the video.

As we move into this uncertain period of time, I want to stress how important it is that we care for and support one another.  We have students, staff and community members who are anxious about exposure risks and awaiting diagnosis. Either for themselves or a family member.  Let us not forget to both act with precaution and be careful with our own health.

Not having school is a really big deal - for all of you as well as for staff.  School is so much more than just academics.  It is a place where you not only come to academically learn - but to come to find support, connect with your friends, express thoughts and ideas, have fun and learn how to cooperate, collaborate, work as a team, problem solve, and many-many other things.  It is our normal - what all of you have done for 9 months of the year since you were five.  And now it is disrupted.

When I was in high school, I missed a week and a half due to extremely heavy snow.  It was during the winter, during wrestling season.  I remember feeling at that time that the world was ending because I couldn't see my friends and I was losing a good portion of my season.  (I really did not mind the break from academics... shhh....)  I simply cannot imagine what this is like for you all - to lose 6 week of school, sports, friends, etc....   And I know that a short break from academics may be appreciated, but a severe disruption is a totally different thing!  All of this is anxiety producing and even a bit frightening for a number of us.

With all that in mind - there are three things I would like you to do:

      1)  Watch the Jostens "The Harbor - Rooted In Love" video.  Here is a Link (https://www.jostensrenaissance.com/)  This is an informative and powerful video for you  - as well as your parents - about finding the common threads in what we all are feeling, and using those threads to connect with each other even as we are separating ourselves.  Bonus points if you get your parents to watch it!

      2)  Do your best to engage in the lessons your teachers are sending out.  It is important to continue to academically learn - and to be able to master learning in this online format.  It is a skill you will use for the rest of your life.

      3)  Create a meme along one of the following themes / lines and send it to me.  I will post good, funny, creative, and interesting ones on FB to share with the community!  They DO need to be school appropriate and NOT mean to anyone.  My effort at making a couple examples are below.  Maybe you will see yours there!

         *  I'm not missing homework...  But I am missing ??

         *  My new classroom

         *  My teacher preparing a remote lesson

         *  Parents reaction to no school

         *  Parents helping with homework

I truly care about each and every one of you and how this is impacting you.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to your teachers, counselor, or any admin.  As things progress, remember our POWER Values and how you can apply them to help you overcome any obstacle.

Keep your eyes focused forward!  We will continue to have challenges in front of us, and I know we can meet these challenges; together, all things are possible

I want to see 100% of you graduate!!!

    Panther Families -

We are definitely going through a very unique and unprecedented time as we deal with the impact of COVID-19.  The stress created for students and families from closing schools for such a long period of time is not lost on me or any other school district employee.  I am a parent of a high school junior who will be out of school for the next six weeks as well.  The worry and anxiety of the unknown is real.  As we go through this together, I want to be as helpful as I can to assist you in navigating the next six weeks and the fallout from that.  I will continue to send weekly updates for you.

I am also thankful for my staff and all of you who have practiced patience over perfection and given us grace as we forge our path while keeping the health and safety of our students at the forefront. Every staff member of BLHS takes our responsibility to your students and your family seriously.  We are resolutely committed to do everything within our power to make sure our students’ educational needs are met. We will be collaborating with each other, as well as educators from other districts to monitor and adjust daily to improve upon our methods of delivering education during this uncertain time.

In an effort to be helpful and share as much information I can,  I have listed a number of things you can do to support your student's learning as well as a list of resources you may need.

Things you can do to help or need to know:
    • Help your student to relax, not to stress.  We are not alone.  Schools across the state are in the same situation.  We WILL make it!  This is a fantastic opportunity to help teach that life is not fair, to develop coping skills, develop problem solving skills, how to look at things with a "glass half full" lense - not "half empty", and to demonstrate & strengthen our POWER Values (Perseverance, Ownership, Work ethic, Engagement, and Respect).  Have a discussion about how each of these values applies to our current situation and how each can enhance or deter success.
    • Work with your student to plan out at least 2 hours a day to work on school work.  This time needs to consistently happen every weekday - except for Spring Break of course! Your student may say, "I don't have anything to do - no work or assignments".  If you hear that - please double check with teachers!
    • Ask your student(s) how each teacher will be communicating class information. This will help you to understand what they may need to be successful as well as what you should see them doing.  Email will most likely be used a lot - so make sure your student is reading email.
    • Ask your student to cc you on all assignments they are turing in.  This will help you to keep track of progress and stay in the loop.  This will definitely help to reduce the potential for problems later!
    • Sign up for all Remind 101 accounts pertaining to your students - classes, school, etc..(School Remind 101 info in the Resources Section below) - so you are notified about things when your student is notified.
    • Continue to read information coming from me as well as the district.  Stay informed.
    • BLHS will have staff in the building available 7:30am - 3:00pm to assist you if you need to come in to retrieve medication or your student's personal belongings.
    Resources:
    • Food/Meals - the district is providing grab-and-go meals for all students under the age of 18 starting Monday, March 16, at Daffodil Valley Elementary & Liberty Ridge Elementary from 10a.m. - 12 noon.  The district is working on a plan to help deliver boxed breakfast and lunches to designated bus stops in an efort to better support families as well.  More info coming as decisions are made.
    • The attached Family Message March 13  from the district office has additional information about Meals, Childcare, and Extended Learning.
    • Bonney Lake Food Bank: https://www.bonneylakefoodbank.org/    They are so helpful for all families in need.
    • The Sumner-Bonney Lake Family Center - (253) 891.6153 has tons of support for families.  I have attached the Family Center's informational brochure  which outlines many of the services they provide.
