Principal's Message

    Parents,

Wednesday, September 18th is our Bonney Lake High School Open House.

You are all invited to walk through your student's schedule and meet their teachers!  We want you to know about all the exciting things happening here at Bonney Lake High.  Students are welcome to attend with you, but it is not required.

In an effort to go paperless, we will not be providing copies of schedules at Open House.  Here are the ways you can have access to your student's schedule:

    • Use Family Access on your smart phone to pull up the schedule.
    • Have your student write it down for you to bring
    • We will be asking all students on Wednesday, during Advisory, to take a screenshot of their schedule and text it to you with a reminder of Open House that evening.
    • If it is not possible for you to have access to a schedule via a device (computer/phone), a printed schedule will be available upon request that evening in the Career and Counseling Center.

We will start in our commons promptly at 5:30 with a quick welcome from Principal Turner. A bell schedule will be used to go through the periods of the day - you will spend 10 minutes in each class including Advisory.

Teachers will share information about their courses, how to stay up-to-date on what's being learned, how to track student progress in each class, communication, and support for students.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday the 18th!

    Panthers & Panther Parents,

Happy Friday!   The first full week of the 2019-20 school year is complete!

This coming Wednesday we have Open House.  Please come and take advantage of this opportunity to meet your scholar's teachers, walk their schedule, and learn class expectations as well as ways you can support your scholar throughout this school year.  I have attached a document that contains more information about Open House .

I also want to encourage you to join our booster club - Panther Parent Pride (PPP).  PPP works endlessly to provide the means to connect school, parents, and community to enhance students' high school experience.  They support over 30 sports and clubs, providing organization, funds, and events past what BLHS is able to provide.  For example, they organize a "Safe & Sober Graduation Celebration" every year providing a fun , engaging way for graduating seniors to celebrate. The support the PPP provides BLHS is absolutely amazing - and necessary.   All parents/guardians are included and invited to become involved.  For more information, please email Blhsppp@gmail.com.  They will also have a table at Open House so you can get information there as well.

    Below are important upcoming dates:

    9/18 - Open House - 5:30-7:30 pm

    Panther Parents,

This year BLHS has had a very large number of new students - way more than we had projected.  This resulted in many of our classes having 32 to 36 students.  We work to try and keep every class around 30 or below.

With the help from the district, we addressed this immediately and have hired more staff.  Today, we adjusted our course schedule, added in the new teachers and created the necessary classes to reduce our class sizes.  This is a very good thing.  Tomorrow the counselors will be adjusting student schedules to fill the new classes and fix the class size issue. The entire process may take a few days.  Our goal is to have every student's schedule fixed by the end of the day Monday.  The greatest impact will be for freshman and sophomores.

I want to thank you in advance for your understanding and patience in this process.  I know it is hard to change classes/teachers right at the beginning of the year, but it is a necessity.

    Panthers & Panther Parents,

We had a great start to our school year!  It is my goal to send out an email every week with bits of information as well as all the upcoming important dates.  There are couple things you can help us with.

First, please talk to your scholar about making sure to keep his/her cell phone put away during class.  We have a very clear policy that there are to be NO cell phones or earbuds in class.  Over the last few years, the entire staff noticed how cell phones and earbuds were getting in the way of instruction, as well as, scholars' ability to engage in lessons.  The research on cell phones and learning supports what teachers were seeing.  It is our mission to ensure every scholar learns, that every scholar gains the skills to be successful and every scholar - 100% - graduates!  Our cell phone policy was developed to support this mission.

Second, please make sure your scholar is dressed appropriately for school.  There are many things that may be super cute and popular and appropriate to wear at home or in the community - but are not appropriate for school.  There are three things in the dress code policy that we really need your scholars to know.  1)  No hats, 2) clothing must cover stomach and chest, and 3) undergarments must be covered.  Here is a link so you can read the district's Dress Code Policy in the Student Family Information Guide (pages 48&49).  It is uncomfortable for all involved when we have to redirect a student about a dress code violation.  Any and all help in this is greatly appreciated.

Third, Picture Day is Monday September 9th. All students should have their school picture taken on the 9th.  Even if you are not purchasing school pictures this year, every student should have their picture taken.  We use these pictures for the yearbook and for ASB cards.  If you want to purchase school pictures, you can use the flyer that was mailed home from B&B School Pictures. If you didn't receive that flyer, you can order online at the following address:  www.bbprepay.com

Finally, I have attached the September issue of High School Years  for you.  It is full of useful information.  Please take a few moments to look at it.

    Below are important upcoming dates:

9/9 - Picture day- during school hours

9/13 - Freshman Activity Night - 5:00-6:30 pm in the commons - then bus to the football game at Sunset Stadium in Sumner.  Permissions slip due 9/11.  Don't miss out!

    9/18 - Open House - 5:30-7:30 pm

    10/15-10/18 - Homecoming week

    10/19 - Homecoming Dance - BLHS Commons 8:00-11:00 pm

  • First Day Update

Posted by Sarah Gillispie on 9/4/2019

    Panther Parents,

We had a fantastic start today!  Our ASB Leadership students welcomed out freshman at the door with smiles, high fives, and Panther beads.  The freshman class spent the next 4 hours in an energetic assembly and then with our Panther Crue Leaders (upperclassmen) who lead them through a number of activities, including a tour of the school and a Q & A section. The sophomores, juniors and seniors arrived around noon, bringing an outstanding positive energy and excitement with them!  At 12:30 all students went to their Homeroom and then to all six periods for a short amount of time.

I, along with every Panther staff member, want to thank you for sending your scholars to us!  We are super excited about this school year and will undoubtedly see many great things throughout the year!  It is our collective goal to have each and every student, 100%, find success and to graduate!  Thank you for partnering with us!

    A few quick reminders:

    • We will be issuing all freshman and new BLHS scholars their Chromebooks on Thursday 9/5 and we will be checking all 10th-12th grade Chromebooks on Friday 9/3/19. Please remind your scholar to come to school with a fully charged on Friday.
    • Please remember to purchase Assurance (electronic device coverage) for your scholar's Chromebook. Assurance covers your child's electronic device. See the attachment for more information. Now is the time to take advantage of our reduced rate of $20 through the month of September. This will cover your scholar's electronic device until next school year. It is highly recommended for all of our scholar and staff members to purchase assurance.

Note, after purchasing Assurance, the electronic device will need to be checked by personnel in the BLHS Library for the assurance to go into effect, unless it is bought this Thursday or Friday. Devices that are not checked will not be covered by assurance.  I attached an information form.  Assurance can be purchased through our bookkeeper or on line ( https://payments.sumnersd.org/ - use your family access username and password).

    • We start every day of the first week with a Homeroom, so the bell schedule is different than the norm.  Next week we will be on our normal bell schedule.  Here are the schedules for the remainder of the week:

    Wednesday 9/4

    Thursday 9/5

    Friday 9/6

    SBLSD Device Coverage Program 19-20
