Keeping students safe: Guidelines for e-bikes, scooters, skateboards, motorcycles

As more students ride electric bikes, scooters and skateboards to school, we’re asking families to help reinforce safe habits before students leave home. A few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe.

Safety reminders

Please talk with your child about safe riding habits and expectations before they head to school.

  • Wear helmet (required by law)
  • Follow traffic rules and stay alert
  • Dismount when arriving on campus
  • Lock ride at designated racks on campus
  • No riding on tracks, fields or inside buildings
  • Do not charge e-bikes or scooters at school due to fire safety risks

Difference between e-bikes and e-motorcycles

Understanding the type of ride students are using is an important part of staying safe and following the law.

E-motorcycles

  • No pedals, function like motor vehicles
  • Must follow all traffic laws, not allowed on sidewalks
  • Registration, license plates, insurance required
  • Must be operated by a licensed driver
  • Helmets required

E-bikes

  • Has pedals with an electric motor that assists/propels without pedaling
  • Driver’s license, registration, insurance not required
  • Helmets required
  • Three classes:
    • Class 1 & 2: Up to 20 mph, allowed on bike paths/lanes, sidewalks and some trails (not allowed on sidewalks in Sumner town center/downtown business district)
    • Class 3: Up to 28 mph, riders must be 16+, not allowed on shared-use paths, sidewalks or non-motorized trails

By reinforcing these expectations at home and at school, we can help keep our students and school community safe.
