Prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest — Screen Your Teen
Feb. 4 | 8:30 am-3 pm | SHS Gym
Every year, thousands of kids die when their heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), this syndrome can happen without symptoms or warning signs. The Puget Sound area alone loses three to five kids each year.
Consider signing up your student for Sumner High School’s heart screening event: Feb. 4 from 8:30 am to 3 pm.
It’s not a heart attack. SCA is an abnormality in the heart’s structure or electrical system that can be detected with a simple EKG. But EKGs are not a part of your teen’s annual well-child or pre-participation sports physical. All students are at risk, not just athletes.
At the Feb. 4 event, Nick of Time Foundation and a medical team of local health professionals will perform non-invasive EKG screenings with no needles or x-ray exposure. Every student also receives “hands only” CPR and AED training and how to respond to emergencies. The entire screening process takes about 40 minutes. Watch this video from a previous SHS heart screening event.
How to schedule an EKG screening:
1) Go to http://bit.ly/NoTFEKG and click “Book Appt”
2) Download and fully complete the health history form and return to school to confirm the appointment
Nick of Time Foundation has screened thousands of teens throughout the Puget Sound area, detecting hundreds of heart abnormalities, dozens of which put those teens at risk for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Several required life-saving corrective surgeries as a result of a condition uncovered during a screening.
About Nick of Time Foundation
The foundation was created in memory of Nicholas Varrenti, a seemingly healthy, multi-sport athlete who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and died at age 16. NoTF programs work together to help protect our young people and communities by providing EKG Youth Heart screenings, emergency response plans that include CPR/AED education, and SCA awareness as we train the next generation of first responders.
