The Wheel Deal: Unicycling club a hit at Emerald Hills Elementary

The Emerald Hills Elementary gym on Wednesday and Friday mornings is a busy place. 

Stop by and you'll find the enthusiastic members of the unicycling club honing their skills, finding their balance as they ride around the gym on their single-wheeled cycles. 

PE teacher Mr. Holme started the club this year with about 13 unicycles that were previously in storage. When the club first started, students couldn't even manage to sit on the cycles, and now many are riding them without any assistance at all. Some students can even ride the Giraffe, a 5-foot tall unicycle.

"I'm proud and impressed with them," Mr. Holme said. 

Unicycling club members range from 1st to 5th graders. While they're all at different levels, they're dedicated to learning the craft. 

Autumn, a 5th grader, joined the club because she was also part of the juggling club led by Mr. Holme in previous years. She got a unicycle as a gift and now practices at home with some other kids in her neighborhood. 

"The club has a lot of different opportunities and Mr. Holme is a great person," she said. 

Autumn has passed her level 1 cycling test — which includes mounting a unicycle unassisted and gracefully dismounting — and now wants to move on to more challenging levels. 

Every once in a while the students might stumble or fall as they learn — but they get right back up to try again.
