Supporting early literacy for our youngest learners with free books

Sumner Early Learning Center kindergarteners were excited to get their very own copy of “You are a Honey Bee” – they are the ELC Bees, of course.

The free books handed out on Monday were made possible through a partnership with United Way, Amazon and the Imagination Library of Washington.Throughout the day, various special guests read the book aloud to kindergarteners. One of those special guests was Dr. Willie Stewart, retired school administrator from Tacoma Public Schools and a United Way volunteer.

Imagination Library of Washington's mission is to foster a love of reading among young learners by ensuring equitable access to free monthly books mailed directly to their homes from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

If you or someone you know has children ages 0-5, they can apply for free books to be sent in the mail by registering at imaginationlibrary.com. More than 10,000 families are already registered for the program in Pierce County.

We are grateful to United Way, Amazon and the Imagination Library of Washington for inspiring a love of reading and equipping our youngest learners with the tools to be successful in the early years.
