School Board District 1 Director Appointment Application is Open
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School Board is appointing one new director to fill District 1. The District 1 director position was vacated through resignation, effective March 20, 2024.
The appointment process for this seat is now open. Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is inviting our community to review information about the process. All interested candidates should apply between April 17 and April 21, 2024.

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School Board expects to have the appointed director take the oath of office by June 12, 2024. The legal deadline for appointments is 90 days after the resignation effective date, which would be June 19, 2024.
Under state law, this vacancy is filled by the School Board through appointment. Please refer to Sumner-Bonney Lake School Board Policy 1114 and Procedure 1114P for additional information.
To be eligible, state law requires candidates to be United States citizens and registered voters of District 1.

Upon receipt of application materials, the district will consult with the Pierce County Elections Department to confirm eligibility. Candidates determined to be ineligible due to voter registration status/residency will not be considered for appointment.
Term for Appointment: When a School Board seat vacancy occurs outside the regular election cycle, the current board appoints a candidate to fill the vacancy until the next regular School Board election. The District 1 position was on the 2021 ballot and has roughly two years remaining. The appointment will run through the remainder of the present term. District 1 will be up for election in November 2025 for a 4-year regular term.
School Board Directors cannot receive a salary for board service under state law. Directors receive per diem payments of $50 per event and for performing other services on behalf of the school district. The total cannot exceed $4,800 per year. (Policy 1730)
Please note: Per 1114P, newly appointed school board members will be subject to fingerprinting checked using a complete Washington State Criminal identification card and required to have a records check through the Washington State Patrol criminal identification system under RCW 43.43.830 through 43.43.834, 10.97.030, and 10.97.050 and the federal bureau of investigation before assuming duties. The District will reimburse a Director for the associated background and fingerprint check expenses if incurred.
