What is equity

alt-text

Definitions:

  • Educational Equity: “is achieved when all students receive the resources they need so they graduate prepared for success after high school.” -Center for Public Education
  • Educational Equity: “means that each child receives what they need to develop to their full academic and social potential.” -National Equity Project
  • Educational Equity: “the elimination of the predictability of success or failure by any social or cultural factor AND the dismantling of inequitable practices and policies.” -The Equity Collaborative

Equity Initiative Goals (2018)

  • Ensuring safe environments for our students (physically, socially, emotionally).
  • Responding to incidents of hate and bias in a clear, consistent manner.
  • Ensuring equitable access to education and addressing barriers of racism and bias that would preclude this.
  • Continuing to identify barriers to equitable access to education, including examples of racism, institutional and structural racism, and individual bias.

Why lead with race?

  • Race Matters. Almost every indicator of well-being shows troubling disparities/disproportionalities by race.
  • Disparities are often created and maintained inadvertently through policies and practices that contain barriers to opportunity.
  • It’s possible-- and only possible-- to close equity gaps by using strategies determined through an intentional focus on race.
  • If opportunities in all key areas of well-being are equitable, then equitable results will follow.
  • Given the right message, analysis, and tools, people will work toward racial equity.

What is racial equity?

  • Removing the predictability of success and failure that currently correlates with race or any social/cultural factor.
  • Interrupting inequitable practices, examining biases, and creating inclusive school environments for all students, especially our historically marginalized ones.
  • Discovering and cultivating the unique gifts, talents and interests that every human possesses, especially our historically marginalized ones.

What is racial equity in education?

  • Raising the achievement of all students while narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest performing students and eliminating the racial predictability and disproportionality of which student groups occupy the highest and lowest achievement categories.
