Community Relations
Title 1, Part A Parent and Family Engagement
The district will support effective parent and family engagement and strengthen student academic achievement through actions that support each element of the federal requirements in ESEA Section 1116 (A-F) and if applicable, Section 1116 (c) (d) (e) (f), as listed, and described below.
A. Jointly Developed and Parent Input. Parents and families will have the opportunity to jointly develop and provide input for the Title I, Part A program and policy. The district will involve parents and family members in:
1. An annual meeting of parents of participating Title I, Part A students will be held to explain the goals and purposes of the Title I, Part A program. By December 1 of each school year, the District Title I, Part A Coordinator will provide the coordination, technical assistance and support to assist Title I, Part A schools/principals in planning and implementing annual informational meetings to parents/guardians of participating students;
2. Parents will be given the opportunity to participate in the development, operation and evaluation of the program. Annually, parents/guardians and staff who comprise the Title I, Part A Parent Involvement Committee will be given the opportunity to participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the program and the parent involvement plan; and
3. Parents will be encouraged to participate in planning activities, to offer suggestions, and to ask questions regarding policies and programs. Parents/guardians will be encouraged to offer suggestions and give requested feedback regarding related policies and programs. An annual Title I, Part A program survey will be provided for such input at each Title I, Part A school.
4. Parents will be given the opportunity to review the school improvement plan by the end of December of each year at a building sponsored event and throughout the school year on our Sumner-Bonney Lake School District website.
B. Technical Assistance. The district will provide coordination, technical assistance, and other support to assist schools in planning and implementing effective parent and family engagement activities. This may include meaningful consultation with employers, business leaders, philanthropic organizations or individuals by:
1. Identifying barriers to greater participation by parents in parental involvement activities;
2. Use findings of the annual Title I, Part A evaluation to design strategies for more effective parental involvement; and
3. Revise, when necessary, the district and school parent involvement policies.
C. Integration. The district will coordinate and integrate parent and family engagement strategies with other relevant federal, state, and local laws and programs, by:
1. Conducting joint parent meetings with other programs;
2. Holding Meetings at various times of the day and evening;
3. Arranging for in home conferences; and
4. Utilizing Title I, Part A funds to facilitate parent attendance at meetings by payment of transportation and child care costs.
D. Annual Evaluation. The district will conduct, with meaningful involvement of parents and family members, an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parent and family engagement policy in improving the academic quality of all schools served under Title I, Part A and use the findings to design evidence-based strategies through the following:
1. The District will schedule a meeting in the spring of each year to conduct a Needs Assessment for the purpose of attaining parent and family input into both the school and district needs of Title I, Part A. This meeting will be posted in newsletters and on the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District website.
2. Each building receiving Title I, Part A funding will conduct a survey by spring of each year to review the needs of the Title I, Part A plan. This will be completed at the Title I, Part A Family Night. Survey results will be tabulated and utilized to make revisions to the Title I, Part A plan at applicable schools.
