Committees
Committees of the Board, when used, may be created by a majority of the Board after consultation with the Superintendent. No more than two interested Board members may serve on any Board appointed committee. The majority of the Board will appoint interested Board members to serve on such committees, the purpose and terms of which will be determined by a majority vote of the Board.
This policy applies to committees which are formed by Board action under this process and policy, regardless of whether the committee includes Board members. It does not apply to committees formed under any authority delegated to the Superintendent.
Board committees support the governance role of the Board by preparing alternative proposals and recommendations for consideration by the Board as a whole. Board committees are advisory only and are not to direct or advise the Superintendent and/or staff.
The Board will identify the committee as a temporary or a regular committee. A temporary committee’s existence will run until either a calendar date, or until its purpose is complete. A regular committee will continue until a Board majority votes to discontinue it. Each January, the Board will review existing committees and make adjustments if necessary to the term, purpose, and membership of a committee based on a majority vote of the Board.
The Superintendent will appoint one or more staff members who will serve on a committee. After consultation with the Superintendent, a majority vote of the Board will appoint the committee chair who will be responsible for leading the committee and developing the committee’s meeting agendas. The committee chair does not need to be a Board member. The committee chair will seek to establish a regular meeting schedule at the first meeting with committee members.
The Superintendent may develop additional guiding procedures to assist with the reasonable implementation of this policy.
