All curriculum and instruction in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District is based on the foundation of essential Washington State Learning Standards (WSLS). Each curricular program outlined below is the vehicle used in our classrooms to ensure access for all students in our district to meet or exceed grade level standards. GK Focus Priority Standards
The essential knowledge and skills at each grade level required to achieve success for this school year and beyond. The priority standards account for 70-80% of instruction time. Teachers assess and reteach the priority standards as needed. Priority standards align with the key concepts included in state testing and support a math trajectory of skills that lead to middle school algebra.
Priority Standards Have:
Endurance-skills and knowledge that last beyond a test.
Leverage-application to other subjects/disciplines
Readiness-foundational for success in the next grade level.

K-2 Language Arts is broken out into two sections: Knowledge and Skills. In grades 3-5 these are integrated.
Knowledge:
- Complex Read-alouds
- Background knowledge
- Text-Based discussion
Skills:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics
- Writing
- Grammar/Vocabulary

Social Emotional Learning

Science
Integrated into CKLA units as well as additional inquiry science units in Grades 3-5.
Science in K-2 is integrated within our CKLA Units.
