Demolition of 13 vacant, District-owned houses near SHS is complete. Next step: Add fill to the vacant lots when the weather improves and the sites are dry.

    12/6/19

In continuing to provide ongoing information about construction activity around Sumner High School, this is an update from our last communication to you in September. Here’s what to expect in the coming weeks near the SHS campus in preparation for the Sumner High School modernization and expansion project and relocation of the Elhi Hill High School Program.

Demolition of vacant houses: Begins week of Dec. 9

    • Demolition of 13 District-owned vacant houses: 11 on Mason Street and Wood Avenue, 2 on Meeker Avenue.
    • Project is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks to complete. Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends/holidays (only if necessary).
    • Expect to see trucks, bulldozers, construction workers and dumpsters. Along with demolition and removal of the debris, structural fill material will be brought in to fill in areas where basements and crawlspaces existed.

Elhi Hill High School Program moves into new location: Late December

    • The District’s successful Elhi Hill High School Program will move into a freshly-renovated, District-owned building near SHS at 1518 Main St. (former site of the Family Center, which is now located on the Sumner Middle School campus).
    • The completed building renovation included work on the floor, walls, electrical and HVAC system, painting and roof.

We thank our neighbors for their support and patience as we work on these critical steps to prepare for a modernized and expanded Sumner High School. 9/9/19

Here’s what to expect this fall near the SHS campus in preparation for the Sumner High School modernization and expansion project and relocation of the Elhi Hill High School Program:

    • Now through late fall: The District’s successful Elhi Hill High School Program is set to move to its permanent location near SHS at 1518 Main St. (former site of the Family Center, which is now located on the Sumner Middle School campus). Construction crews are on site doing some interior remodeling and a small amount of work on the roof. You’ll temporarily see construction trucks and dumpsters as part of this prep work before students and staff move in early winter.
    • Week of Sept. 9: As part of a geotechnical study in preparation for construction, a crew will be boring 100-feet-deep holes into the ground on SHS’s parking lot west of the gym and softball field. This means neighbors will hear noise associated with the boring during regular business hours. The bulk of this work is expected to take place Sept. 10-14.
    • Mid-Late October: Of the 13 District-owned vacant houses near SHS, 9 require hazardous material abatement. This is an important and state-required process to protect neighbors, workers and the environment prior to demolition. For about four weeks, you’ll see certified abatement workers in hazmat suits going in and out of these vacant houses on Mason Street, safely and properly disposing of debris. These activities include air monitoring and other control measures to ensure public safety throughout the project. Demolition of all 13 houses is slated for later this fall.

We thank our neighbors for their support and patience as we work on these critical steps to prepare for a modernized and expanded Sumner High School. Stay up-to-date on the District’s construction projects at www.sumnersd.org/construction. For questions about these construction activities, please call Capital Projects Manager Marina Tanay at (253) 891-6084.
