  • Panther Update: 1/30/21

    Posted by BLHS on 1/30/2021
    Panther Families,

First semester has come to an end and second semester starts on Tuesday. We will start the semester continuing with Distance Learning, with no change in the days and times of classes. The daily schedule is outlined later in this email. Your student's second semester schedules are available to view through Skyward Family Access. Please take some time Sunday or Monday to review your student's schedule with them. There have been some necessary and unavoidable schedule changes due to safety protocols in preparation for students to return to in-person learning.

The district is continuously working with the Health Department and OSPI as to when it is safe to have high school students return to in-person learning through our Hybrid option (Stage 5). The district has sent out information regarding when and how that decision will be made. You can access updates through the district Teaching and Learning webpage. All students have been marked to either continue with Distance Learning Option or to return to in-person learning through the Hybrid Option. You should have already been notified about this. If your student is not assigned the option you want, please email me as soon as possible so I can make the change. When we are able to move to Stage 5, students will have to know if they are in Cohort A or Cohort B. This information will be updated on Monday evening.

Starting Monday, Feb. 8th, our Advisory classes will run on Mondays from 10:30-11:00.  These are required online Zoom classes (synchronous).  Attendance will be taken during the Zoom class and it will represent attendance for the entire day.  These classes are extremely important to attend because they will be working on preparing for course registration for the 2021-22 school year.  The information they will get in their Advisory classes is critical for graduation planning and decisions.

Sports are starting!! Football starts this Tuesday, Feb. 2nd.  Girls Soccer, Volleyball, Xcountry, Girls Swim & Dive, & Golf are set to start on Feb. 8th.  You can get detailed information from our web page - Panther Athletics.

As you can imagine, the District’s COVID-19 health and safety procedures are quite extensive and incredibly detailed in order to include all local, state and federal guidelines and requirements. It’s important for all families, students and staff to know what’s expected from them when they return to our buildings to help ensure the safest environment possible.

Please read this condensed version of our safety plan for a high level overview on these topics:

    • Universal Safety Practices

    • Student and Staff Health and Screening Protocol

    •  Face Coverings

    • COVID-19 Symptoms, Suspected Signs, Positive Cases

    • Nutrition Services Plan

    • Student Transportation

    • HVAC Systems

When we transition to Hybrid/In-person learning (Date: TBD)

    For Families Who Selected Hybrid:

    • A/B Schedules- Part of the communication from the district included the A and B designation that correlates with in-person hybrid schedules. The A and B groups allow us to maintain social distancing guidelines in the classrooms and throughout our school.
      • “A” days are Tuesdays and Thursdays in-person; Students will attend periods 1-6; Wednesdays and Fridays asynchronous learning.
      •  “B” days are Wednesdays and Fridays in-person; Students will attend periods 1-6; Tuesdays and Thursdays asynchronous learning
      • Monday office hours: Teachers will have an hour of office support each Monday. Links to these sessions will be available through each teacher’s Google Classroom.
      • Academic support: The school day ends at 1:35 p.m. in order for teachers to provide additional academic support. Teachers will be available for a 45-minute Zoom session to answer questions and offer additional support at the end of each day Tuesday-Friday. Links to this session will be available through each teacher’s Google Classroom.

For Families Who Selected Distance Learning:

    • Distance Learning Schedules - Part of the communication from the district included confirmation that your child will continue to participate in distance learning. Students will not have to Zoom into classes periods 1-6 on any day. Instead, the following schedule has been developed:
      • Periods 1, 2, 3 will be on Tuesday and Thursday. Students will Zoom into their classes. Times will be based on the high school master schedule.
      • Periods 4, 5, 6 will be on Wednesday and Friday. Students will Zoom into their classes. Times will be based on the high school master schedule.
Links to this session will be available through each teacher’s Google Classroom

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Can families request A/B learning group changes? Alongside our counseling team, we have balanced our A and B sections to ensure classrooms stay under their maximum capacity. One of our primary goals was to keep families who have students at multiple schools together.  Due to these complexities and space, we are unable to accommodate requests for changes to a student's A/B status.
    • Can families request  a change from Remote Learning (eventually Hybrid Learning) to Distance Learning? Requests can be made by contacting your child’s counselor. Decisions will be communicated as quickly as possible.
    • Can students request second semester class changes? Any requests to change classes will need to be made with your child’s counselor. We must take into consideration class size and social distancing constraints as we consider each request.
    • How will these changes benefit my student? When our students do move to in-person learning, we are confident that our Distance and Hybrid learning models will best meet the needs of families.
    • How will students receive the new Zoom links for their second semester classes? All students will receive a Welcome Message from their new teacher on Thursday, Jan 28 that will include the Zoom link. Students will also have new Google Classrooms for the second semester and each teacher will post their Zoom link on their Google Classroom.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. We are looking forward to a wonderful second semester!

    Panther Parents,

Winter Break brings a much anticipated and needed rest from school!  Together, we have embraced distance learning and have adapted to a completely different way of learning.  It has been challenging, but we're succeeding!  Student engagement continues to amaze me!  Although we are tired and weary of the pandemic and all the elements that come with it, many have come together to do whatever necessary to support learning in creative, innovative ways.

As we turn towards 2021, my wish for staff, students, and families is to have hope and a renewed focus.  We have, and will continue to accomplish so much together!

To help support your student(s) and to make sure everything is on track, please find an hour or so to review your student's grades with them through Family Access.   While many students may be annoyed or resistive to this, it is one of those parental love things we need to do and they will understand later in life.  When we return in January, there are only 4 short weeks until the end of the semester.   Some teachers have taken some time to make short one minute videos for our students with some sweet educational tips.  Check them out!  Teacher Tips

I have also attached the latest issue of "High School Years " for you to read.  I am a parent of three kids, my oldest 21, and have been in education for 23 years, and I still find very useful nuggets of information from this publication!  It is always worth the read.

Have a fun, love filled and safe break and enjoy the holidays!

I have attached a PDF with all the staff Zoom conference classroom links .  You may also find them on our website under "Fall Conference Zoom Links."   The teacher Zoom links will take you to their waiting room, where they will be able to admit you at your starting time of your conference.  So showing up early will not disrupt the conference currently happening.

Each teacher's email is linked as well - click on their last name.  If you are having difficulty, will be slightly late, or need to cancel - please email the teacher.

I am also available to meet with you if you like - my Zoom conference link is listed.  If you would like to meet with me - please email so we can schedule a time.  I will do my best to accommodate short notice requests as well.

Lastly, this is our first time doing conferenced this way and we sincerely hope that they proceed smoothly.  We are excited to be able to meet and partner with you!

      • Can / should students attend the conferences?  Yes, please, this is best but it is not required.
    • Are there classes on Tuesday?  Tuesday class times (8:30 - 11:30) are canceled.  Assignments for Monday and Tuesday will come to you through email & Google Classroom.
    • Students need to respond to teachers' assignments on BOTH days.  Teachers need to take attendance - all 6 periods on Monday and periods 1, 3, 5 on Tuesday.  Student response to the assignments is what will be used to count as "attended"

    Panther Parents,

We are a quarter of the way through our school year!  There is an awful lot that is happening in our ever changing world that causes an expanse of emotions.  How we “do” school right now (distance learning) is one of those changes.  However, one powerful thing that has not changed is the love, care and commitment we have for every one of our students.  This will not change!  Our goals are, and will continue to be, to achieve 100% graduation and educate the whole child.

We will have Parent Teacher Conferences on Nov. 23rd (8:00-3:45 & 5:00-7:30) and Nov. 24th (8:00-3:45).  Conferences will be 10 minutes in length and will available to be scheduled by parents/guardians in Skyward Family Access on Monday, Nov. 16th.  All conferences will be held via Zoom, with the conference links emailed to you on Friday Nov. 20th.

    Upcoming events:

    • Nov. 14 & 18 – Food Drive drop off (14th-10-2 PM, 18th 3-6 PM BLHS Main Office),
    • Nov. 13 - Picture retakes, 11:30 - 3:00 @ BLHS – Social distancing & masks required.  Come in anytime within the window of time.

Career Readiness Graduation Cord - Revised Criteria/Process

A Career Readiness Cord is an honorary designation that signals to future employers and post-secondary institutions that students have participated in a wide range of high school career preparation courses and have demonstrated evidence of 21st-century skills valued in the workplace. We have revised our criteria and process for the class of 2021 and beyond. Read more here.

    Spanish Distance Learning Class

The family center will be offering a class for Spanish-speaking parents called “Consejos de aprendizaje a distancia para padres” (Distance Learning Tips for Parents) by Appointment at the Family Center in Sumner on Monday, November 16 and Tuesday, November 17th.  This is a follow-up to the tech class we offered in September, but parents do not need to have attended the September class to attend this one.  We plan to also offer a recorded version of the presentation early next month, but will not be recording this meeting live. Attached are flyers for the event as well as Distance Learning Tips for Parents.

    HIV/AIDS Prevention Curriculum

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is offering an opportunity for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students currently enrolled in 8th grade Skills for Life or 9th grade Health classes.

Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDs prevention education in grades 5 through 12.  Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents/families are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.

This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 8 and 9 by previewing the teaching materials used in the classroom.

Parents/families wishing to exclude their child from the HIV/AIDS curriculum required by our state must preview this curriculum and sign the exclusion form.  Parents/families of students in other grades will have the opportunity to preview the curriculum in the spring.

Family Preview for 8th Grade Skills for Life and 9th Grade Health Fall 2020

    November 16, 2020 - December 11, 2020

If you wish to preview the curriculum, please send a request to dawn_palumbo@sumnersd.org. Please include your student's name, school and grade level.  A copy of the curriculum will be emailed to you in pdf format for review along with the exclusion form.

  • Open House Night 2020

    Posted by SBLSD on 9/22/2020

    Panther Parents & Guardians,

In a normal school year, we would have an Open House Night within the first few weeks. This year, our Open House is virtual and our staff have created videos about each of their classes.

If you already know your student's teachers and classes - you can go straight to our Open House page & find the videos that apply to your student.   https://www.sumnersd.org/blhsopenhouse2020

If you need assistance to remember all your student's courses, you can open up their schedule in Family Access to find their teachers. Then click on the teacher’s name on the Open House page.

Next, click on the period your student has that teacher to view information about their class.

As always, if you have any questions feel free to reach out to your student's teachers.  If a video does not work for some reason, please reach out to that teacher to request access for that period.

We hope these videos help give you a better understanding of your student’s classes this year.

  • Panther Update: 9/18/20

    Posted by SBLSD on 9/18/2020

    Panther Families,

We have had a really strong start to our school this week!  I am proud of all our students for their attendance and engagement in their classes.  While school is different (distance learning), it is exceedingly clear that BLHS students take their education seriously!   Thank you for all you are doing to ensure your students are present and ready to learn.  This week was very good - but next week will be even better as we get into the groove.  It feels so good to be back in school!

Each week, every teacher will be sending out a Friday Forward email to each of their students.  This email will have some information as to what students learned this week, a preview of what will be coming next week - including any major assignments that will be due, and some information as to what students can do if they want a jump start on next week's work.  Teachers will send their emails out Friday afternoon or evening.  So it will definitely be in your student's email by Saturday morning.  Reviewing these with your Panthers is a super easy way to keep informed as to what is happening in their classes.

Starting next week, we will be integrating our daily announcements into our 3rd and 4th period classes.  Students will get them there.  If you would like to read them, they can be found on our BLHS Webpage and clicking on Daily Announcements.  Or just follow this link.

There are three important things you need to know about Mondays.

      -  First - Teachers will send out a 35 minute or less asynchronous (work / learning to be done at home) lesson every Monday.  Some teachers may put this lesson into their Friday Forward email - so students can do it on the weekend.  So your student will have something from all 6 of his/her teachers.  The assignment is required.

      -  Second - Teachers will be taking attendance for every period.  To be counted as "present" your student needs to complete the short Monday asynchronous lesson before 11:59pm Monday.  If a teacher sends it out with their Friday Forward - it can be completed on the weekend and count as Monday's attendance.

      -  Third - All teachers have office hours on Mondays to be available to help students.  The hours are posted in their Google Classrooms.

Chromebooks are expensive - $300 - $400!  So make sure to get our "Chromebook Assurance".  That way, if something happens to your students Chromebook - it is fixed at no cost to you.   Cost for our Assurance is $25.  You can purchase it online.  I attached a PDF with Instructions  to do so.

We normally have an "Open House" the second week of school where parents/guardians can come into the school to meet teachers and learn about the courses their students are taking.  Due to COVID, we cannot do that - so we found a way to bring Open House to you electronically.   Right now you can meet Panther teachers on our web page - and click on "Meet Panther Staff."  Tuesday we will send out our Open House link, where each teacher has created a video describing their course, requirements, and supports. Please look for it.

Lastly - BLHS has a Spanish Help Line (253.891.5790) to help Spanish speakers to communicate with the school.  If you want to contact the school and only speak Spanish, or would prefer to speak Spanish - please call 253.891.5790.  Leave a short message as to the best way and time to contact you, and we will call you back ASAP and communicate with you in Spanish.  We do not want a language to be a barrier for parents who are wanting to get information or be involved with their scholar's education.

    Have a safe weekend.

    Go Panthers!

  • Family Survey

    Posted by SBLSD on 9/18/2020

    Dear families,

Thank you all for your patience and flexibility as we begin the 2020-2021 school year.  On September 4th, we received new guidance from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department showing that Pierce County has now transitioned from the high level to the moderate level of COVID-19 infection. It's good news that COVID-19 cases continue to drop. We want our students and staff back in school as soon as it's safe to do so with all the required health and safety protocols in place.

A drop in COVID-19 activity level means districts can plan to bring back elementary aged children for in-person instruction using a hybrid learning model while adhering to all health and safety protocols. After K-5 elementary students successfully transition to a hybrid learning model, overtime, secondary students in grades 6-12 will transition to a hybrid learning model.  Overtime is defined by the TPCHD as a minimum of 21 days.

To prepare for this transition, we want to reconnect with your family to make sure we have current, accurate information on your preference to either continue in a distance learning model or transition to the hybrid learning model.

A brief description of each model is listed below.

    Hybrid Instruction:

It is the district’s goal to plan and implement a safe return to school for all staff and students in a hybrid A/B model. Students would attend school in person on either Tuesday and Thursday, or on Wednesday and Friday. The remaining three days of the week students will be in distance learning. Strict health and safety protocols will be followed for students returning to in person hybrid instruction. This includes 6 foot social distancing, wearing face coverings, hand washing and sanitizing, as well as daily health attestations. Buildings will be cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.

    Full Time Distance/Online Learning:

Based on feedback from families, the district is hoping to utilize current staff as much as possible for distance learning. A third party provider will also need to be used for certain grade levels and classes. Families should know that not all classes are available with distance learning. If a family selects distance learning, this choice will remain in effect for the remainder of the school year. Details for distance learning will be finalized once the exact number of interested families is determined.

Next steps: Once survey data is received from all families, new schedules may need to be built across the district at all schools to accommodate requests. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible for all students.

Please follow the links below to access the survey in Family Access. The survey will remain open through Tuesday September 22. Once you are logged into Family Access using guardian credentials, you will be directed to enter your choice of hybrid or distance learning for each child in your family. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child’s school or email the district registrar at register@sumnersd.org.

Thank you in advance for helping us plan the transition to hybrid learning.

If you have trouble logging in, choose Forgot Your Login/Password and enter the guardian email associated with the district. An account reset will be sent to your email.
