    Dear BLE Families:

Do you have a family member who is a Veteran or currently serving in the Armed Forces?  On Thursday, Nov. 9th, 2017 at 8:15 am (our student morning message time), we would like to invite all Veterans in our student families and our BLE community to our Fitness Center.  That morning, our Viking Choir will be singing songs in their honor and students in our Girl & Boy Scout Troops will post our Flags to start our school day.  In addition, all students will be bringing home an Honor Star paper project to help create our visual Wall of Honor.  The Honor Star paper is a family project if you would like to honor someone that has served in our Armed Forces or reserves.  All Stars will be displayed in our school for the month of November.  This will be a short tribute to our community Veterans for the many things you have done for us and for our country.  We would be honored with your attendance on Nov. 9th!  Watch for an electronic survey document to come out late next week so that you can RSVP for this event.   If you have questions, please call the BLE front office at 253-891-4450.  We hope you will be able to join us!

    Thank you,

The BLE Viking Choir & Staff

    Viking Families,

Families are essential partners in promoting good attendance because they have the bottom-line responsibility for making sure their children get to school every day.  In return, we want do everything possible to support you in this process.  Absences - excused and unexcused - add up and quickly lead to academic trouble.  Do you know how much is too much?  Do you keep a running tally of how often your child is out of class?  We are starting a process this year that will help families monitor and support positive attendance.

Attendance Awareness Letters will be mailed home to families three times throughout the school year (October, December and March).  The first round will occur in late October.  These letters will show how many absences have been logged for your child, in addition to showing the school average.  Good information to know if, for example, a flu virus has impacted overall school attendance.  Not all families will receive a letter, however.  Only those with children who have missed 10 percent or more of school from Sept. 6 to Oct. 6.

Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10 percent of the school year, can translate into 3rd graders unable to master reading, 6th graders failing courses and 9th graders dropping out of high school.

Please use these Attendance Awareness Letters as informational tools as your child progresses through the school year.  By working together to monitor attendance, we can avoid long-term consequences impacting student success.

    Sincerely,

    Connie Halvorson-Tran, Assistant Principal

-Why do you do what you do?

-How do you want to be remembered doing what you do?

Compliment your child on being super-safe at recess! Students have been learning the expectations on the playground, and most importantly are having fun playing safely at school!

  • New Recess Program

Posted by Bobbi Snider on 9/7/2017

This school year, Bonney Lake Elementary is implementing a new recess program that creates a place for every student on the playground to feel included, be active and build valuable social and emotional skills.

The Sumner School District has partnered with Playworks, a national non-profit, to ensure that all of its elementary schools continue to offer safe, fun and healthy play with a focus on positive student engagement and reduced negative incidences.

So, what’s different? Bonney Lake Elementary’s recess team will choose from hundreds of games that promote inclusion while applying group management techniques that teach students how to play well together, resolve conflicts and develop leadership skills. Students will enjoy the familiarity of traditional games such as 4 Square, Tag and Jump Rope, but with variations designed to create inclusive and positive experiences.

Research shows that positive and active play helps:

    • Improve students’ behavior and attitude toward school
    • Foster more empathetic kids
    • Develop more engaged and productive citizens

While this new recess program is a valuable experience for students, we recognize it might not be a fit for everyone. We will continue to offer options for play outside of organized activities. Students at Bonney Lake Elementary will continue to have a choice in what they play at recess. This first week at school, students will be learning the expectations of the games during their recess time with the recess team. Every year we teach students the expectations of the playground so that students can have a safe and positive experience.

If you have questions, please call me at (253) 891-4450.

    Sincerely,

    Bobbi Snider
    Assistant Principal, Bonney Lake Elementary
