In October 2014, The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) awarded Sumner School District a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant to offer extended learning day programs at both Daffodil Valley and Liberty Ridge Elementary schools. The grant provides $241,909 annually for five years to hire program staff and provide an initial funding base for learning enrichment activities. Students attending the free after-school and summer programs will participate in academic and learning enrichment activities connected to their classroom studies.
School-and-community partnerships are a key component of 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Key community partners in the effort include organizations like the Gordon Family YMCA, Washington State University Cooperative Extension Center and Pierce County Library System, among others.
