Guidance from Guidance

  • Please make sure that your student has submitted a registration form for the 2012/2013 school year!
  • Summer School info is available soon! Please have your student sign up for an appointment with their counselor if they are interested in Summer School.
  • Senior Culminating Portfolios are due on May 2. Seniors will present their portfolios in a new format on May 16 and 17. Students will be receiving more information about this through their Advisory classes.
  • As spring heats up (hopefully), so do social opportunities. Please help us by making sure your Spartans stay safe. Have full knowledge of where your student is going, and with whom. Have set check in times and a set curfew.

PE Department information - Healthy Kids are Better Students
Research shows the positive effect of moderate to vigorous physical activity and fitness on academic performance. To help students better manage their personal fitness, PE teachers are utilizing new curriculum Five for Life that focuses on the "five components of fitness,” which are: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Fitness measurements in the five areas help students to evaluate their current fitness levels and set goals for how to maintain or improve individual fitness. The result of these measurements is a personal fitness report which provides you with a snapshot of your child’s fitness status and the change in that status over time.

Five for Life will help students to understand how fitness affects general long-term health and will empower students to take charge of improving their personal fitness.

Please support your child’s fitness development by encouraging their participation in all aspects of fitness measurement at school and by joining them in physical activities and healthy eating at home.

Your child’s teacher will also be able to send you class messages as well as additional progress reports to keep you up to date about your child’s missing assignments and class progress. Please update your e-mail today!

SHS Library Update

  • Extended Library Hours: Our library and library staff are here to share books and improve research skills!  This year we have extended our hours until 3:30 PM to help students gain more access to library resources and technology!  Welcome!
  • District Library Catalog Change from Alexandria to Destiny:  The new library Destiny catalog is up and running.~ Use the links at http://library.sumnersd.org to access library materials through Destiny from home or from any Internet-connected device.  Anyone can search as a guest, or use your student computer login, and search Destiny Quest and find “My Info” to renew, review, and place books on hold.  Search for Follett to find a Destiny app for your tablet or phone!
  • Library Resources from Home:  Did you know that you can also access library reference databases from home with any Internet-connected device?~ World Book, Opposing Viewpoints, ProQuest, Health and Wellness Center, Global Issues, and other databases are great resources for homework help and research projects!  Use the green “Library Resources” link on the library homepage to unlock and download the password guide from the link at the top (password: 5500).
  • Overdue Fines:  Starting Mar. 15, 2012, we have added a $2.00 overdue fine for books that are returned 2 months or more overdue. Books that are more than 3 months overdue may be charged the full replacement cost if resource demand requires the library to purchase another copy.
  • Please renew or return library books on time.  Books are checked out for 2 weeks at a time and may be renewed up to 3 times if there are no current holds on the title. Remember, you can now check your account information and renew online through Destiny Quest, (find “My Info”).  We will continue to send overdue notices every few weeks through 1st period teachers and/or email.
  • Library Book Club:  There is still time this year to join us in the library for lunch to talk about books from the Evergreen Book Award list. Our upcoming book discussions will be about If I Stay by Gayle Forman (Mar 21st), The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan (Apr 25th), and We Were Here by Matt de la Pena (May 16th).  Find the book club link on the library resource page for more information.

Let’s Celebrate!
At the end of this past winter’s sport season, all the winter coaches and athletes were named the SPSL 2A Winter Sports Sportsmanship Champions.  A job well done!  This shows what a great job EVERYONE is doing in preparing our Spartan student/athletes to be the class of the SPSL.

Dance/Drill Team
Congratulations to the BLHS/SHS Dance/Drill Team for their “Exceptional Rating” in the Military category at State and for their “Excellent Rating” in the Pom category.
This very young (3/4 of the team are ninth and tenth graders!), very dedicated group of ladies reached their goals this year by scoring their highest scores EVER as a team!  They placed in 6th place in the Military category and 7th place in the Pom category!

Thespian Competition
Congratulations are due to Austin Heathery for being elected as one of the 5 state officers for the Washington State Thespians (representing 71 schools).  The 800+ state drama students at the recent Thespian conference elected him to represent them for the 2012-2013 school year. This is his second year elected.

Special Olympics
With an outstanding display of defense, rebounding, and selfless play, the Sumner/Bonney Lake Special Olympics team brought home the GOLD medal from Wenatchee and the Winter Olympics games!!!!

The kids had a great time at the opening ceremonies, where they were all given handmade red, white and blue scarves knitted by people from all around the United States....very cool!
Saturday, the team took on Eastside Catholic and beat them 38-20. This was an especially poignant victory for the kids since this is the team that beat them handedly in the finals two years ago.  Saturday evening included an Olympic dinner and a dance for all athletes.
Then the team played the Yakima Hurricanes in the morning and walked away with a 48-20 victory.  The best part of this game was that EVERY single one of our players was able to notch a bunch of minutes on the floor AND all of them scored.....FANTASTIC team win!
This put us into the finals and another re-match with Eastside Catholic.  Eastside was ready for us this time and came out playing (and fouling) hard.  Spurred on by an amazing fan-base of families, peer coaches, staff members, and friends, the athletes rose to the occasion and were victorious 32-16.  The first thing out of one of the player's mouths was, "Coach, does that mean we are champions for the WHOLE year?!"  Yes, yes it does!

Our Individual Skills competitor, John Adams, in his first year participating in the Special Olympics program, also did dynamite and took home a silver medal.
Thank you for all of the support you have shown our athletes and coaching staff this year...they are a great group and we are all very lucky!

Special Education
Recently, SHS hosted one of the largest DLC dances in anyone's memory - put on in the SHS Commons by Mayzie Roat and assisted by John Norlin's Leadership class!

It was amazing - students came from 5 programs! - Mary Anderson's Class, Bob Mitchell's class, Chad Sturtz transition program,  Lacey Hertlein's BLHS DLC and Grant Pennington's transition program.

Food and paper products were donated by our cafeteria  and Starbucks as well as some of the parents. The music was great and some students danced for 2 hours!  Students who don't often talk, talked!  Shy students danced, not shy students danced. TA's and leadership students took time to reach out to each student and escort them to the dance and to make certain all had a great time. Behavior by all was great and cleanup crew was amazing!

Bob and Mary wish to thank everyone who came, who helped, teachers who allowed student helpers to miss class to join us, parents who came to help or watch, and all of those who support our program.
