The IB Programme
The comprehensive International Baccalaureate program challenges students with rigorous academic work and incorporates all of the core academic courses, elective options and the fine arts. Due to the caliber of the program, many colleges offer up to a full year of college credit for students who earn the prestigious IB diploma. As universities have individual policies, it is important to check with prospective colleges to determine credits they offer for the IB Diploma.
IB and College Credit

The IB Diploma, Certificates, Associates Diploma
The IB Diploma is issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization to students who meet the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of six IB subjects in a prescribed curriculum, including all required internal and external assessments.  IB courses run two years.
  • Completion of 150 Creativity, Action and Service hours and the required reflection and documentation
  • Submission of a 4,000-word independent research Extended Essay.

IB Certificates are issued to students who complete requirements in specific courses, pass the end exams at a level three or above but do not pursue the full IB Diploma.

Sumner High School issues an IB Associates Diploma to students who meet the requirements of three IB courses. For additional information www.ibo.org.

Statement of Commitment
Students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and are motivated to do the hard work that comes with the IB Programme are welcome to participate.  While there is no application process, students who have chosen to participate in the Pre-IB Program at SHS will have developed the skills requisite for success.  An academic record that demonstrates that a student has chosen the most rigorous courses available to them and has consistently been successful with A’s and B’s is most likely to be successful in the IB Programme.
