Third Math Requirement – Changes in graduation requirements beginning with the class of 2013
Following legislative action, Washington State updated the graduation requirements for students graduating in 2013 and beyond. A significant change was to require increase the rigor of required mathematics beginning with the graduating class of 2013. Graduation requirements now include a third credit of mathematics in addition to the end of course exams for Algebra I and Geometry.
Students must successfully complete Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II /Advanced Algebra. An alternate course may be chosen as the third credit of mathematics if it is individually approved. The current non-credit requirements, The Culminating Project, High School and Beyond Plan and meeting standard on State assessments remain in place.

Advanced Algebra (Algebra II) is the standard 3rd math credit* required for graduation and is a minimum 4-year college admission requirement.
* Students may elect a third credit of math different from Algebra II if:
The alternate math class is chosen based on a career-oriented program of study identified in their high school and beyond plan.
They meet with a school representative and their parent/guardian to discuss their goals as well as admission requirements of 2 and 4 year colleges.
Student, parent/guardian and school agree and sign a form documenting the choice.
