January is School Board Recognition Month
January is School Board Recognition Month in the state of Washington, a declaration that coincides with a nationwide effort to honor and underscore the important role of elected school board members in public education and student achievement. We encourage parents, students and educators to recognize the dedication and hard work of our school board members in preparing our students for a successful future. As local decision-makers, they are creating schools that meet high education standards and serve our community. With leadership from our school board, the Sumner School District provides an excellent education for our students and contributes to the quality of life in our communities.
At the January meeting of the Board of Directors, the Board will present Crestwood Elementary School with books for the school library in observance of School Board Recognition Month. The Sumner School Board consists of five members elected by the voters of the district. The School Board’s five directors are elected from five separate areas within the district to serve four-year terms.
At the December Board meeting, newly-elected School Directors Paul Bucich, Casey Chamberlain and Richard Hendricks were sworn into office. As part of the annual reorganization the Board also elected officers for 2012, with Hendricks serving as president, Bucich as vice president, and Chamberlain as legislative representative. Retiring Directors Jeff DeMarre and Greg Hanon were honored for their many years of service to students and families.
