Bonney Lake Elementary A school modernization project to update and modernize major mechanical systems, improve wiring and technology infrastructure to support computers in the classroom and bring building up to all current energy, seismic, fire and life safety building codes.
Students will attend Donald Eismann Elementary (formerly Elementary #9) during the 2010-2011 school year while modernization is underway at Bonney Lake Elementary. The phasing and staging plan explains school attendance boundaries or alternate classroom assignments for students during the construction phase of school modernization projects. Bonney Lake Elementary School Playfield Expansion The Bonney Lake Elementary School Field Playfield Development project is now complete. As part of the playfield expansion, Buckley Nursery constructed an educational nature trail in a wooded area, a grass soccer field and new perimeter fencing. Additionally, the project provides a multipurpose play area for students. Thanks to the Sumner Soccer Club for their donation of $10,000 to the Sumner School District in support of the field development project. Bonney Lake High School Classroom Addition Bonney Lake High School was originally designed and constructed with future expansion in mind. Plans for permanent additions to two of the school’s wings were included in the original architectural and engineering work for the facility. The school was built to serve 1400 students in the gyms, lunch room, library, restrooms, hallways and parking lots, but currently provides classroom space only for 1200 students. Given current enrollment trends and forecasted growth, the Board authorized construction of eight additional classrooms to increase instructional space to accomodate 1400 students. The estimated cost to construct and furnish both wings is $3,626,600. The District’s Capital Projects Fund currently has money available for this project. These funds were accumulated through state matching dollars, school impact fees, interest earnings, cost savings and efficiencies in other construction project. Bonney Lake High School Roof Replacement Project Although Bonney Lake High School has only been open for two years, the roof at the new school experienced some leaks beginning with and continuing through last year’s rainy season. Tarps are now covering portions of the roof to prevent further leaking or damage to the school and gymnasium. The District has since rejected the roof system as installed, and the general contractor for the building has indicated that the roof will be replaced this summer. Emerald Hills Elementary School Emerald Hills Elementary School will benefit from installation of new carpet and floor tile in classrooms, hallways, gym and the multipurpose room. The school will also be painted inside and out in preparation for students and staff returning in September. This project is part of the summer maintenance schedule to repair and improve school buildings, facilities and grounds. Maintenance and Operations crews are also remodeling the student store at Sumner High School. Eismann Elementary The Sumner School District Board of Directors named the district’s newest elementary school in honor of Dr. Donald A. Eismann. The school’s namesake served as superintendent of the District for 22 years as a passionate educational leader. Students, community members and staff submitted recommendations for the school’s name, citing Eismann’s great impact on the quality of education for students through innovation and collaboration. A new school assignment for families living in the McAlder attendance area makes Donald Eismann Elementary their new school. New bus routes are also a part of preparing for the move next school year. Students, families and staff are getting ready for the move and beginning to think about a new school mascot and new school colors for Eismann Elementary. Lakeridge Middle School This project for new construction will replace the current school and reduce overcrowding. The existing gymnasiums will be remodeled and incorporated into the new school, which will be located behind the present building. When the new school is complete, the old school will be razed and new athletic fields will be developed. Construction of a new building will include increased square footage so that current portable classrooms can be eliminated. Also, the cafeteria and commons area will be significantly enlarged to meet the needs of a growing student enrollment. Lakeridge Roofing Project Nearing the end of its useful life, Lakeridge Middle School is receiving a roofing upgrade to see it through until a new building is constructed. Despite continued maintenance and repair, the flat roof has reached a condition that is beyond normal repair techniques and has resulted in leaks throughout the school. The current project will extend the life of the existing roof another four or five years and eliminate leaks and water damage to computers, furnishings and equipment. The work is scheduled for completion prior to winter rains. Maple Lawn Elementary A school modernization project to update and modernize major mechanical systems, improve wiring and technology infrastructure to support computers in the classroom and bring building up to all current energy, seismic, fire and life safety building codes.
The Maple Lawn Huskies wil make McAlder Elementary School their temporary home for the 2011-12 school year while their school undergoes a school modernization. Planning is underway and packing will being for the upcoming move. Temporary bus routes for this nearly “all walker” school will be used for next school year only. The phasing and staging plan explains school attendance boundaries or alternate classroom assignments for students during the construction phase of school modernization projects.
