JOIN US FOR FUN SPIRIT WEAR THIS WEEK AT BLE!!

TUESDAY (12-13-16):  Seattle Sounders won the MLS Cup Championship this weekend!  This is the SuperBowl of soccer and huge deal for soccer fans and a proud accomplishment for Seattle sports.  The game was absolutely incredible!  Seattle pulled out the victory in a penalty-kick shootout after a 0-0 score following overtime!  Very exciting!  They were dominated most of the game by Toronto who had the home field advantage.  But the Sounders defense was unstoppable.  With a shocking "no shots on goal" by the Seattle offense vs. 19 shots on goal by Toronto, the Sounders still prevailed to win the cup. So, awesome!

Seattle is holding a parade tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/13/16)  to honor the Sounders and it would be fun if we honor them here at BLE, too.  So, let's wear our BLUE and GREEN!

FRIDAY (12-16-16): To celebrate the start of winter break, we are having an all school pajama party!  Please send your child to school in pajamas with appropriate shoes on Friday!

    Dear Viking Families,

Brrrr….it’s cold outside, but that doesn’t stop the amazing things our Vikings are learning and doing here at Bonney Lake Elementary!  Be sure to stay up to date with our December news, as many great things are happening and the month is short.

Tonight is our PTA Arts and Crafts Night - Be Sure to Come!

PTA Family Arts and Crafts Night is tonight from 6:00 — 8:00 pm in the gym. Kids can make snowman soup, terra cotta reindeer, jingle bell necklaces, and MORE! Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there from 6:30 — 7:30 pm.

PTA will also be having their Santa Shoppe at the same time! Students and families can buy inexpensive gifts in a safe and fun environment. Gifts cost $1 — $5. We hope to see you there!

Vikings Are Busy Learning in December!

Please support your student’s academic and social growth by making daily school attendance a priority.  When students don’t show up for school they miss out on the fundamental reading and math skills, and so much more. We know that this time of year can be very busy and appreciate your continued support.

Thank You For Your Canned Food Donations!

Thank you to the families who helped make our food drive a huge success!  As a school community, we were able to collect over 2,000 non-perishable items for our local food bank.  Your generosity and selfless actions will benefit many families in our area.  Once again our Vikings are doing amazing things for others!

Time to Visit the Lost and Found

Please be sure to check the lost and found items outside of the office.  All items will be donated during winter break.  It would also be very helpful if you could label all coats and items to ensure you get them back if they become misplaced.

    Science is Super Fun!

It's time to start thinking about the STEM Fair.  Students in grades K-5 have the option of participating by doing either a Science Project or an Engineering project.   We are available as resources and support, but this project is essentially done at home.  Please watch for more information coming home in your student's backpack next week!

    Important STEM Fair dates:

    • December 6th - STEM Fair packets available on the SSD website home page www.sumnersd.org.
    • December 13th - STEM Fair entry forms available from the front office or your classroom teacher.
    • January 5th at 6:00 pm – (Optional) but highly recommended meeting for parents and students in the library.
    • January 10th - STEM fair entry forms are due to Ms. Cheesman
    • Saturday, February 25th (time TBD) @ District Stem Fair @ Sumner Middle School.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cheesman by email at: Becca_cheesman@sumnersd.org.

Viking Strong - Together We Are Strong!

We are so fortunate to have the most amazing students, families, teachers, and staff here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  Together we are strong!

Reminder!!! Yearbook cover contest ends – turn in by MONDAY!

Have your artists make their yearbook cover entry this weekend!! Last chance to turn them in on Monday!  If you are chosen, then your artwork will be the cover of the yearbook and you will also receive a free yearbook copy.  Excited to see our Vikings show their artistic abilities!

    Dear Viking Families,

Can you believe that it is already December!  Read about all the great things happening here at our wonderful school.

Parent Pep Talks Monthly Themes and Skills

As we enter our second month of our school-wide parent book study, busy December is a perfect time to reinforce the mental skill #5, Calm Down.  Some tips from this month’s chapter include:

    - Focusing on the controllable - Count your blessings

    - Beware of burnout - Find time to rest & mix in some fun!

    - Relax and breath - Slow down and take 5 deep breathes

Be sure to take a look at the activities within this chapter - page 46 and the one at the bottom of page 49.

    All Pro Dads

We had another great turn-out this morning for our All Pro Dads meeting. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, be watching for our next meeting.  For more information please contact: blepta98391@gmail.com.

Don't Forget Our Annual Food Drive!

The Bonney Lake Elementary Annual Food Drive is on now!  We are collecting hygiene and non-perishable food items until December 9th.  The second grade teachers and their classes have challenged the rest of the school to match the amount of items that they  have brought in.  At the end of our collection period, all items will be given to the Bonney Lake Food Bank to use in our community. Larger donations can be brought into the front office and will be applied to the grade level total. Thank you in advance for helping us in this event!

Meeting the Needs of the Community - Selflessness - Listening With Understanding & Empathy

Vikings are learning about caring for others within our community during the month of December.  In conjunction with these powerful discussions, we are also talking about selflessness and listening with understanding and empathy.  Please touch base with your child a couple times a week and ask them to share with you what they are learning and ways they showed putting the needs of others ahead of their own.

    Come Get Crafty!

PTA Family Arts and Crafts Night is December 9th.  Be sure to watch for more information to come home soon.  This is another fantastic opportunity for fun family time!

    Calling All Artists!

It’s time for our Bonney Lake Elementary yearbook cover contest.  If you would like to participate be sure to pick-up a pink flyer with entry requirements and turn in your entry by December 9th.  If you are chosen then your artwork will be the cover of the yearbook and you will also receive a free yearbook copy.  It is exciting to see our Vikings show their artistic abilities!

Viking Strong - Our Students Are Our Treasure!

We are so proud of our students and consider them the most valuable members of our crew!  We thank each and every one of them for coming to school everyday and doing their personal best.  Be sure you take a minute to remind them of how treasured they are to all of us here at Bonney Lake Elementary.

    In Honor of Our Veterans
On Tuesday we proudly demonstrated our appreciation and respect for those who have served and who are currently serving our country in the armed forces.  A special thank you to Mrs. Selle, the Washington State Honor Guard, our own BLE Boy and Girl Scouts, our Viking Choir, and our honored Veteran visitors.  It was an amazing assembly!

    Socktober Success
Thank you all for the wonderful sock donations we received for all our families. We were able to collect over 2000 pairs of socks and had fun doing it! Congratulations to Mrs. Gonzales' kindergarten classroom for winning the ice cream party and special recess for collecting 202 pairs of socks!

"Parent Pep Talks" Book - Hot Off the Press
Bonney Lake Elementary families will be receiving a copy of the book Parent Pep Talks by Justin Su'a. Here at BLE we have regular staff book studies on various topics that best support the current needs of our students and families.  Last summer many teachers and staff read this book and found it extremely valuable, as educators and as parents.  For that reason, we are excited to announce that BLE families will have the opportunity to receive a free copy of this very helpful parenting book during November conferences.  The themes and skills within the chapters align directly with our Viking Monthly Themes which include Habits of Mind, Big 8 Character Traits and Second Step curriculum.  See the suggested reading guide below.  By following this guide, you will be able to reinforce the character themes and skills that your child is learning and practicing at school.  Have a great 3 day weekend from all of us at BLE!

Posted by Sarah Gillispie at 11/4/2016

    Dear Viking Families,

November already! Here are some exciting things that will be happening at Bonney Lake Elementary…

    Focus on Family and Friends
This month we are talking and learning about forgiveness, and how to accept apologies in order to have positive relationships with our peers and members of our community. This aligns perfectly with our Habits of Mind skill for the month which is learning with understanding and empathy.  Thank you for talking with your students about these valuable life skills.

    Limo Rides And Fundraiser Pickup
Thank you to the PTA for rewarding top sellers of our fundraiser to students with the limo rides today!  Also, please pick up your fundraiser items today in the front of the school between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m!

    Safety First!
Parking lot safety is on our radar and we are asking for your continued support. In an effort to keep our parking lot safe for students, staff, and families we would like to share some helpful reminders:

    • Please drive slowly while entering, within, and when leaving the parking lot.
    • Only use the lane closest to the curb for student drop-offs.  This lane ensures the safety of all students arriving to school.
    • Try to avoid parking in a space or using the parking lot to drop off your student.
    • Pull all the way forward in the drop-off lane to allow space for other parents to drop off their students.  This will ensure a more safe and efficient drop-off system.
    • Please do not park or stop in the crosswalk areas.  They are marked with stripes and cones.
    • Remember to be patient and kind to all Viking staff and families and know that we are all doing our best.

Safety is our first priority here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  For that reason, we want to be proactive in preventing dangerous situations and we genuinely appreciate your continued support.

Viking Strong - Parents and Families Are a Part of Our Team!
We have a strong team of parents and families here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  This week we thank and celebrate all of you who make a difference at our school!

    Dear Viking Families,

It’s another great week at Bonney Lake Elementary! Take a look at the amazing things that happened this week and events that we are looking forward to in the future:

Math Wasn’t Scary Night was Tueday and It Was a Blast!
We had a great turn-out at our 2nd Annual Math Isn’t Scary Night. Thanks to all of our teachers for planning this fun and informative evening, our students and families for attending, and our PTA for the whiteboards and markers.

October 31st - No Costumes Please
It’s Crazy Sock Day!  Please be sure that your child does not wear a costume to school on that day.  Thank you for making our crazy sock event fun and safe for all students.

READY! For Kindergarten Classes:  Fall Session
Registration is now open for fall classes.  This FREE program for parents and caregivers of children birth to age five provides parents and caregivers with tools for preparing children for Kindergarten.  Get important information specific to your child’s age on how children learn and grow, and receive essential “tools” and activities that you can do together to make learning easy and fun!

READY! For Kindergarten is an educational program for parents that was developed by the Kennewick School District and is administered by the National Children’s Reading Foundation.  As parents, you want your children to have a happy and successful learning experience.  Often parents wonder what a typical 5-year old knows, or should know, the first day of school.  There are readiness skills called Kindergarten Targets.  They are not requirements, but learning goals.  Children who are taught these skills at home get off to a great start at school.  They start ahead and stay ahead, year after year.

    Fall class dates and locations:

    • November 1 - Liberty Ridge Elementary
    • November 3 - Bonney Lake Elementary
    • November 8 - Daffodil Valley Elementary
    • November 16 - Maple Lawn Elementary

*Supper Available at LRE and DVE class only, FREE For Children 0-18, $4.25 for adults

Families new to READY! classes must attend orientation, 6:00 – 6:30 p.m.

Age level classes will be held 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

READY! For Kindergarten is offered FREE to families residing within Sumner School District boundaries.  Out of district families are required to pay a materials fee ($25 one time Orientation fee + $60/per class).  Classes are for adults (parents and/or primary caregivers), childcare is provided for children 12 months and older, pre-registration is required.

    Register online at www.readyforkindergarten.org/sumner

    Wrapping Up Socktober!
    New
socks can be dropped off at your child’s classroom or the front office by Monday, October 31. The class that brings the most socks in will earn a special surprise!

    Viking Logowear - Yahoo!
Logowear came home earlier this week.  Be sure to contact the company directly with the number at the bottom or your order or email our PTA at blepta98391@gmail.com if you have any questions about your order.

Viking Strong - Part of the Crew
We have a strong team of teachers and staff serving students here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  Here are just a couple that we’d like to spotlight this week:

Mrs. Cheryl Warwick, 1st Grade Teacher

This wonderful addition to our crew has been in education for over 20 years and has been serving the needs of students and families, here at Bonney Lake Elementary, for over 19 of those years!  Mrs. Warwick has been a great teacher, compassionate team member, and also a fantastic role model to students.  One of her favorite quotes is A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart.  This is so true of Mrs. Warwick and her continued dedication to our students, families, and school community.

Mrs. Rashelle Thornhill, 4th Grade Teacher

(with her adorable 7 month old daughter Coco (Nicole)

Mrs. Thornhill has been a part of our staff for 3 years and has quickly become part of the great work that is being done each and every day here at our school.  Her consistent kindness and dedication is apparent in everything she does with and for her students.  During her time serving students and families of the Sumner School District, she has grown in her intentional focus on teaching the whole child - academically, socially, and emotionally.

Viking Strong - Part of the Crew

We have a strong team of teachers and staff serving students here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  Here are just a couple that we’d like to spotlight this week:

    Mrs. Stephanie Bylin, Paraeducator

“You can do whatever you put your mind to!”  This is something Mrs. Bylin tells all of her students.  She has been serving the students and families of Bonney Lake Elementary for 27 years. Yes, 27 years!  She is well known for her ability to motivate and support students to work hard and stay dedicated to their learning, even when challenges arise.  During her time here, she has provided educational services in math, reading, and writing. You may have met our wonderful Mrs. Bylin when dropping off or picking up your child.  Or, maybe you have seen her walking to and from school each and every day.  We are so thankful to have her as a part of our crew!

    Mrs. Lori Kuzminsky, Administrative Secretary

This is the lady that makes things happen with her amazing ability to multi-task and her understanding of all the elements needed to keep our Viking voyage on the right path.  It’s all about the fun memories, students, families, and staff for Mrs. K.  She shared earlier this week she was helping a student get nachos for lunch and the student didn’t want the meat that came with the cheese sauce.  Mrs. K tried to explain that the meat had protein and would give the student strength for the day.  The student quickly and adorably responded, “I want to be weak.” These memorable stories are just a part of the everyday life of Mrs. K in her work of serving the students at Bonney Lake Elementary.

Kindergarten Highly Capable Services Referral Period:  Oct. 11-25

Do you know a kindergarten student who performs at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with other kindergartners? Consider referring them for Sumner School District’s Highly Capable Services.

Characteristics of Highly Capable learners could include:

    • Analytical thinker
    • Accelerated learner
    • Advanced language speaker
    • Self-motivated

Referral packet and forms are available in the front office or at http://www.sumnersd.org/

The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round

Please remind your student to make safe and respectful choices upon entering and exiting the bus at the bus stop and at school.  If you have any transportation questions or concerns, you may contact the transportation department at (253)891-6400.

    Kindergarteners are Really Diggin’ Science!

Earlier this week Ms. Cheesman, our Science Specialist,  harvested potatoes with Kindergarten students.  Students have been doing a farm unit and this week’s vocabulary words were harvest and crops.  Thank you to Ms. Cheesman for bringing in a part of her garden - soil, potatoes, and all.  This was lots of fun with hands-on learning!

    Mark your calendars - Conferences Nov. 14, 15, 17, 18

    Dear Viking Families,

Our school is a busy learning center!  As we head into the season of Fall we look forward to more opportunities to support your student in becoming an independent lifelong learner.  Be sure to read more about the great things happening here at Bonney Lake Elementary.

Math Isn’t Scary Night - October 25th from 5:00-6:00 pm

Please plan to join us for our second annual “Math Isn’t Scary Night”.  Your child’s teacher will hold two repeating sessions (5:00-5:25 & 5:30-5:55) demonstrating math activities and strategies used in their classrooms.  Students are welcome and will help parents understand that “Math Isn’t Scary” at Bonney Lake Elementary!  PTA has a special take home gift for all students who attend this event.  See you there!

Viking Readers - Reach for the STARS!

September reading calendars were due last week.  Please support your student in making reading a daily event.  Our goal this year is to have students, K-5th, collectively read at least two million minutes by June. The bicycles in the front office are part of our reading incentive and are awarded in June at the end of the year! We can do it Vikings!

    Socktober Continues!

Please donate new socks of all sizes, colors, patterns and varieties to benefit families in need in our area. Socks can be dropped off at your child’s classroom or the front office by Monday, October 31. The class that brings the most socks in will earn a special surprise!

    IXL Information Has Arrived…

Information can home last week about our computer based math practice program.  Be sure to take a look at https://www.ixl.com/signin/sumner.  Your student’s login information is printed on a label inside their blue folders.  Please let their teacher know if you have any questions.

Frost/Wind/Rain is in the Air - Brrr!

Please be sure that your student is coming to school dressed for our cooler weather and is either wearing or brings a jacket.  (Tip: the student’s name on the label of the jacket is helpful.) We want all of our Vikings to stay healthy and warm, during this change of seasons.  Also, lost and found is now relocated to the front of the office windows for those of you searching for a misplaced jacket or other personal belonging.

Here is important information regarding school emergencies and closures in the Sumner School District

When inclement weather occurs, our goal is to make information available to families about school closure or changes in the school schedule by 5:30 a.m. In this digital age, here's how we can quickly reach you with this information:

    • Family Access: Log into Family Access and click on "Skylert" located in the left-side column. The options you can choose in the "Emergency" column designate how we contact you with closure or school schedule changes. Please be aware that if all "emergency" boxes are checked for various contacts, you could receive closure or changes in the school schedule information multiple ways!  By house phone, cell phone, email, and text.
    • Flash Alert: The Sumner School District uses FlashAlert Newswire (previously schoolreport.org) to inform media and parents of weather closures and school schedule information. Families can subscribe to information posted on the Newswire at www.flashalert.net.

Please continue to stay informed by accessing the Emergency Hotline (253-891-6001), the Sumner School District website and staying connected on Facebook and Twitter.
