  • March 10 Message to Families

Posted by Sarah Gillispie at 3/10/2017

    Dear Viking Families,

Great things are happening and we continue to work hard here at Bonney Lake Elementary. Here are a few things to be aware of:

Clocks Move Ahead on Saturday Night!
Don't forget to change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time on Saturday night. Spring forward and move ahead one hour!

    Say Cheese - Date Change!
Class and group picture day has changed.  We will have pictures taken on March 16th (next Thursday), instead of March 14th. Please be sure to change the date on your calendars at home.

Pennies for Patients - What an Amazing Start!
From March 6th through the March 17th students will have the opportunity to collect change to raise money for the fight against cancer.  Collection containers went home earlier this week. Today we cashed in this week's coin collections for a total of $977.29 which is amazing! Our initial school goal was to raise $1000.00, but we will surpass this for sure! Keep up the hard work Vikings! We have encouraged students to remember that every penny is important.

Dream Big, Set Goals, and Take Action!
During the month of March students are learning more about being committed to a goal, having persistence, and practicing problem solving.  Be sure to talk with your child on how they can apply this learning at home.  You may consider watching this brief video at home with them.  It might be a great opening to a conversation about persistence.  Link

    Mark your calendars
March 6-17 - Pennies for Patients coin drive
    March 16 - Class pictures
March 21 – Rescheduled Second and Third Grade “Swamped” performance at7:00 pm at The Sumner Performing Arts Center.  Students need to arrive at 6:40 pm. Please email Mrs. Selle at Laurie_selle@sumnersd.org if you have any questions

    Dear Viking Families!

It was a short week with the three snow days off.  The district provided the following information regarding how the school calendar has been affected:

“To date, students have lost 3 days of instruction due to weather-related school closures.  The current school calendar includes 2 days for weather make-up.  April 3 and May 26 are now regular school days for all students in grades K-12.  In addition, the last day of school is now Monday, June 26.  In the event of additional weather-related school closures, the last day of school will be affected.”

If you would like to change how you receive notifications from the district office in regard to school closures or changes, the following webpage talks about updating notification preferences in Family Access:  http://www.sumnersd.org/Page/3772

Beautiful Valentine Card Entries Coming In!
This is the last weekend to make a creative Valentine Card to decorate the front office and be part of our contest!  We will be selecting winning cards from each grade level, along with other categories, such as the cards with the "best message", the "funniest cards", etc.  As students complete their cards, they can be turned into the office (for hanging). Students can turn in their Valentine cards up until Monday, February 13th. The cards must have the student's name, teacher's name and the grade on the back and the winners will be announced on Valentine's Day and will receive prizes!

    Dear Viking Families,

We are excited to share all of the great things happening here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  Just a reminder that secondary schools are closed on Monday but all Elementary students are attending school on Monday, January 30th.

    Are You Coming Tonight?
Please join us tonight, January 27th, for our PTA sponsored Movie Night!  Doors open at 6:10 pm and the movie starts promptly at 6:30 pm in the Fitness Center.  Free popcorn will be served and other concession will be available for purchase.  Bring your own snacks, pillow and blanket and come join in the fun.  Remember that this is a family event and all students must be supervised by their parent(s)/guardian(s) at all times.

    Student Drop Off Times
There have been a large number of students arriving at school too early. Fifteen minutes before school starts is the correct drop off time for students.  That is when supervision is available and it is safest for your child.  That would be 8:10 a.m. (and 9:45 on Wednesday mornings). Breakfast at school is served at 8:15 a.m. Bus schedules arrive on our campus at these times as well. Thank you for helping us with this safety issue.

Community Support Makes Our Vikings Strong

Viking Strong - Taking Care of Ourselves

As we think about keeping all of our Vikings healthy and strong, we just wanted to remind everyone that flu season is upon us and this year it is in full force.  Please be aware of some general guidelines to help you decide when your child is too sick to be sent to school. If your child presents a fever over 100.4 degrees and/or has vomited or had diarrhea two or more times in a 24 hour period please keep them and home and notify us with a phone call.  Your child should stay home until they are symptom free for 24 hours.

The Marshmallow Experiment - What’s it All About?

In a world of instant gratification and instant information we are constantly reminded of the importance of teaching our students the value of having patience. Students continue to learning what it means to have patience for each other and how to manage emotions and impulsivity. Enjoy this short video on a popular and adorable social experiment.

JOIN US FOR FUN SPIRIT WEAR THIS WEEK AT BLE!!

TUESDAY (12-13-16):  Seattle Sounders won the MLS Cup Championship this weekend!  This is the SuperBowl of soccer and huge deal for soccer fans and a proud accomplishment for Seattle sports.  The game was absolutely incredible!  Seattle pulled out the victory in a penalty-kick shootout after a 0-0 score following overtime!  Very exciting!  They were dominated most of the game by Toronto who had the home field advantage.  But the Sounders defense was unstoppable.  With a shocking "no shots on goal" by the Seattle offense vs. 19 shots on goal by Toronto, the Sounders still prevailed to win the cup. So, awesome!

Seattle is holding a parade tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/13/16)  to honor the Sounders and it would be fun if we honor them here at BLE, too.  So, let's wear our BLUE and GREEN!

FRIDAY (12-16-16): To celebrate the start of winter break, we are having an all school pajama party!  Please send your child to school in pajamas with appropriate shoes on Friday!

    Dear Viking Families,

Brrrr….it’s cold outside, but that doesn’t stop the amazing things our Vikings are learning and doing here at Bonney Lake Elementary!  Be sure to stay up to date with our December news, as many great things are happening and the month is short.

Tonight is our PTA Arts and Crafts Night - Be Sure to Come!

PTA Family Arts and Crafts Night is tonight from 6:00 — 8:00 pm in the gym. Kids can make snowman soup, terra cotta reindeer, jingle bell necklaces, and MORE! Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there from 6:30 — 7:30 pm.

PTA will also be having their Santa Shoppe at the same time! Students and families can buy inexpensive gifts in a safe and fun environment. Gifts cost $1 — $5. We hope to see you there!

Vikings Are Busy Learning in December!

Please support your student’s academic and social growth by making daily school attendance a priority.  When students don’t show up for school they miss out on the fundamental reading and math skills, and so much more. We know that this time of year can be very busy and appreciate your continued support.

Thank You For Your Canned Food Donations!

Thank you to the families who helped make our food drive a huge success!  As a school community, we were able to collect over 2,000 non-perishable items for our local food bank.  Your generosity and selfless actions will benefit many families in our area.  Once again our Vikings are doing amazing things for others!

Time to Visit the Lost and Found

Please be sure to check the lost and found items outside of the office.  All items will be donated during winter break.  It would also be very helpful if you could label all coats and items to ensure you get them back if they become misplaced.

    Science is Super Fun!

It's time to start thinking about the STEM Fair.  Students in grades K-5 have the option of participating by doing either a Science Project or an Engineering project.   We are available as resources and support, but this project is essentially done at home.  Please watch for more information coming home in your student's backpack next week!

    Important STEM Fair dates:

    • December 6th - STEM Fair packets available on the SSD website home page www.sumnersd.org.
    • December 13th - STEM Fair entry forms available from the front office or your classroom teacher.
    • January 5th at 6:00 pm – (Optional) but highly recommended meeting for parents and students in the library.
    • January 10th - STEM fair entry forms are due to Ms. Cheesman
    • Saturday, February 25th (time TBD) @ District Stem Fair @ Sumner Middle School.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cheesman by email at: Becca_cheesman@sumnersd.org.

Viking Strong - Together We Are Strong!

We are so fortunate to have the most amazing students, families, teachers, and staff here at Bonney Lake Elementary.  Together we are strong!

Reminder!!! Yearbook cover contest ends – turn in by MONDAY!

Have your artists make their yearbook cover entry this weekend!! Last chance to turn them in on Monday!  If you are chosen, then your artwork will be the cover of the yearbook and you will also receive a free yearbook copy.  Excited to see our Vikings show their artistic abilities!
